Any theories as to what drives the climate change deniers? Is it a deeply-considered genuine belief in their position? An over-estimation of their own intellect? Or just a perverse enjoyment of pissing into the wind?
I remember David Bellamy coming to speak at my school in 1990 or 1991, and even back then he was talking about the greenhouse effect merely holding off an overdue ice age. It seems to me that he developed his hypothesis fairly early on, and now clings to it in the face of any evidence to the contrary.

Just out of interest, does Auckland have any buildings "built this or last century" that are really good? I'm asking in the sense that I've only been there a handful of times, all of them fleeting visits without any looking around time.
My impression of much of modern architecture is that it seems to be derivative of earlier innovative work but without any sense that the architect/s has actually grasped what the greatness of that earlier work is.
Here's hoping that you do get something remarkable and that the opportunity isn't wasted on mediocre design *cough*Te Papa*cough*.

I'm <quiet voice> not really fussed about an iTunes store</quiet voice>, but I would love to see a bricks-and-mortar Apple store here.
It bugs me no end when people, after having used my mac, are suitably impressed enough to go in to an Apple reseller only to be faced with dire customer service by people who don't know the first thing about macs. And even those who purport to know often come out with completely erroneous information.
And for me personally, being told by the AppleCare people to go into local authorised service centre to have a particular problem fixed, given a job number, and then being told by the locals that "oh no, Apple won't authorise that", really doesn't enhance the Apple owning experience. I dread having something go wrong with my laptop and having to deal with the service centre again.

The banning of many hazardous things affects everyone. The cost of banning fireworks? People don't get to ooh and ahh at the pretty shiny bangy things in their own backyards and instead have to attend organised displays. Or shall we go with a bogus "thin end of the wedge" argument and claim that the price we'll heve to pay is children soon being banned from jungle gyms?
And Reece, my hand-wringing practices have no relevance to the legitimacy of your argument.

Of course we legislate against natural selection. That's why you can't just throw your newborn baby onto the street to have it fend for itself. Natural selection, sure, but as a society we've decided that children need to be nurtured and protected until they are sufficiently developed to be able to look after themselves.
