Please, not that debunked chestnut again

    You mean debunked like this.

David Cunliffe was the clear favourite in a poll asking which of the Labour leadership candidates was most likely to win next year’s election over John Key. Mr Cunliffe came out ahead of his running mates, with 39% of the vote. Acting party leader Grant Robertson received just 15% of the vote and Shane Jones found favour with 18% of those surveyed.

And, of course with all the caveats about sample size/samplying methods etc, it is also interesting to note - amongst Labour Supporters - the relevant figures were Cunliffe 48%, Jones 29%, and Robertson 9%. and the figure for `None of them' had dropped to 1%.

the sample size is pretty small by that point

True enough... and the sample really skewed by the fact that they only contacted people with landlines.

And notice how Cunliffe is seen as only just as trustworthy as Robertson

There is a clearer difference between them from the point of view of Labour Party supporters

Ah.. I see, I got that one wrong. Trevor Mallard! Well, BE refers to him in passing as well on his piece on Shane Jones.

Why do people dislike him so much?

I presume you mean Shane Jones? I think Brian Edwards gives a partial, but good, explanation for it here.

As far as I can tell a major enabler of clowns like Jones is Cunliffe backers (like the RMTU & DWU) giving him second preferences. Really, what the fuck. Not super impressed at that.

    +1

    Fran O'Sullivan:

Fran O'Sullivan: "After all the chances are he will end up with a top slot on Labour's front bench and a prime shadow portfolio as a kiss-off if he doesn't win the leadership race against David Cunliffe and Grant Robertson."

I hope the new leader, whether Cunliffe or Robertson, shows some true courage and does not do this and it would be good to see the Labour Party rank Jones really low in the party list, if selected at all. In my view , he is truly dreadful. All this rubbish about how he speaks for a certain kind of working class: that is truly insulting to large numbers of people.

I’d also like to see the next Labour leader firmly punish anyone like Shane Jones who slags his party’s natural coalition partner

Exactly. Gordon has it right: Shearer only showed some spirit when dealing with a supposed `challenge' (largely manufactured) from Cunliffe, an easy target given the dynamics of caucus at that time. If he was going to confront any of his colleagues it should have been with the likes of Shane Jones. Let us hope that whoever is the new leader shows a bit more gumption.

Jane Clifton speculates about caucus factional aspects of Labour’s leaderhip contest.

Gordon Campbell discusses the `divisions' and, does a much better job of it. He also highlights the critical issue of the relationship with the Greens.
