  • Hard News: The First Draft, in reply to Russell Brown,

Hmmm. You're right, it wasn't a very good interview and it seems to have had the unfortunate effect of increasing public sympathy with Ken Ring.
People seem to be very upset about the interview being unbalanced - it didn't seem that unbalanced to me, they gave a lot of time to the people who had believed Ring, and very little time to Kelvin Berryman.
It'll be interesting to see how the BSA handle the inevitable complaints.
I'd like to see Kim Hill skewer Ken Ring. But she doesn't suffer fools too patiently either.
Just in case anyone (Hilary?) is in any doubt about the extent of Ring's scientific illiteracy, this is the guy who is on record saying that ozone depletion by CFCs must be a myth as CFCs are 'heavier than air' and therefore behave like bricks in a swimming pool and can't possibly travel to the stratosphere. Seriously.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Tom Semmens,

Tom: in the new subdivision of Pegasus, just to the north of Christchurch, the developers spent approximately $20 million on soil engineering measures to mitigate against liquefaction damage. Apparently it came through the Sept 4 earthquake very well, but I haven't heard how it fared last week.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Hilary Stace,

Hilary: +1. Hurrah for EQC. And ACC.
It probably is too soon for this conversation, but in the meantime here is some interesting reading from Nature on the correlation between corruption and earthquake death tolls on an international scale.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?,

Just heard that a dear friend of my Mum's who worked in Relationship Services (they share a building with Canterbury TV) is safe - in hospital with a broken hip and ankle after being rescued from the building. Sorry I don't know about her workmates. Saw something on One News to the effect that people are still trapped in that building.
It is all just so close and personal. The partner of another dear friend in Chch works a lot in the PGC building and was supposed to be there today.
Am still extremely worried about friends in Lyttelton and their children - haven't heard a thing.
+1 to what George said about point scoring. C'mon guys.

From a contact in the geology dept at the university - all inhabitants of that building are OK. She thought that generally the Ilam campus was relatively unscathed, but mindful of warnings above please take this as unconfirmed.
