  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

He pulled out that appalling line about 'having no kids makes you inferior' - citing the fact that the front bench of the Labour Party had one child between them whilst the National Party had 23.

The scary fundamentalist Christian/Wairarapa side of my family does this continually. 'Did you know that there are no Christians/Catholics/straight people in the Labour Cabinet? Helen Clark won't allow it! Ian Wishart says etc., etc., etc.' It's always stated as absolute fact, and they are quite surprised when anyone calls them on it.

I'm always tempted to ask if they know that Michael Cullen's a 400-year-old Illuminati from the hollow earth, or that Helen Clark spends her free time secretly piloting a Nazi UFO around Antarctica, but I usually bite my tongue.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I am thinking now about joining a political party, for the first time in several years. I can tell you now that no party led by Goff will ever get my vote, let alone my labour, ever ever ever.

I've been thinking the exact same thing tonight. Goff is a hideous anachronism, but if he doesn't get the leadership, I will consider joining. I don't think I can deal with these next 3 years without getting involved somehow.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Yeah, and what was that he was saying about the Nats' party volunteers. That they worked violently, was it? Seriously, was that speech, like, on purpose?

Nice to know that good ol' Kiwi ingenuity and no. 8 wire will get us through in the end, though. Cracker!

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Wow, John Key's an awful public speaker. That speech was better than Sarah Palin's Katie Couric interview, but only marginally.

Nice to hear JK's supporters booing Helen Clark's name, too. What a class act the Nats are.

God, Sean Plunket sounds thrilled. I wonder where he'll be working in a few weeks' time?

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Will this lead to people taking a less trivial, more serious-minded approach to politics, I wonder? You know, less tolerance for the Jane Clifton 'ha ha isn't this a jolly game?' bullshit. I mean, a lot of people are going to be hurt by this government-in-waiting. I mean, seriously fucked over. ACT are a bunch of thugs, as dangerous as any whacked-out-on-ideology cult, and any governing coalition that features them is going to do some serious human damage.

    This is bad.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

given the secret taping and all, I suspect tv3 have a fair bit of arse-kissing to make up.

Yep, because being a serious, grown-up news outlet is all about arse-kissing major political parties.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Every election, I'm amazed at how efficient and painless the whole voting process is. I had to cast a special, because I'd managed to slip off the roll without realizing, but even given that, it took all of 5 minutes.

If only the likely outcome were just as painless. Might be time for a belated OE ...

    What's his suggestion?

Credit controls, and more government intervention in the macro-economy generally.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I do believe that NZ's debt will be very destructive to the social cohesion of NZ. That's what pisses me off about Labour the most. For all their progression, they've glossed over and failed to contain what has been a glaringly obvious problem for years.

Bryan Gould's Rescuing the New Zealand Economy has quite a bit to say about this. There's so much wrong with the monetarist consensus that both main parties have shared for the past 25 years. And virtually none of it gets discussed in public fora. Blaming the appalling state of the newsmedia is one thing, but of course it raises the question: what the hell do we do about it?
