  • Hard News: Friday Music: History, motherfuckers, in reply to Dean Papa,

Y'know, there's an acquaintance of mine that makes racist comments to me that he (purportedly) doesn't believe because he likes to wind me up. That REALLY doesn't make everything ok.

I'd also like to point out that the general tone of the comments on this thread have been attacking on article. Very little ad hominem; some (justifiable, I believe) "this happens regularly enough that it speaks to his nature". So... since you agree that his column was appallingly executed, how about just letting people vent about this appallingly executed article? If he's honestly a decent guy, then perhaps he'll take it on board and stop saying such douchey things.

I've heard plenty of people criticise my favourite music, in a manner that's riled me up no end (thanks lena o, thanks nzmusic.com), but now & then I'll start paying attention because they're smart and they're actually critiquing the music. I'm ALL FOR outsiders putting forward an unpopular opinion, but "being an outsider" doesn't suddenly make you immune to condemnation if you write patently false LCD-pleasing obnoxious bullshit, regardless whether you believe it or are just trying to be "clever".

..an opinion about music unswayed by baubles and trinkets..

I'd wholeheartedly recommend the opinions of "chris" any day of the week (although probably not for any writing job with a deadline).

And you are absolutely entitled to express that opinion - your opinion - as is anyone else entitled to express theirs.

Seriously, you're going with that? Isn't that functionally equivalent to saying nothing at all?

..more likely, based on context, you can be interpreted as saying "you can't diss the guy for expressing his opinion", in which case, you're contradicting yourself.

But if you asked them, I’m almost positive that they’d say the problem is me.

I was thinking about that on the back of people saying a large number of their family are missing stairs. At what proportions can you free yourself from onerous family gatherings by saying "you know - I think everybody there would have a much better time if I didn't go"?

  • Hard News: U: It's about the combos,

Is it possible that somewhere there's an ideological argument from the current govt's POV about "competing" with private companies (ie Sky)? While not necessarily the intention, it'd seem like a nice little bonus of the progressive asphyxiation of Freeview.

I’m saying that it is morally acceptable to call the ref a poofter at this particular rugby match, because the uttering of homophobic slurs and passive tolerance of such utterances is the prevailing cultural practice at these venues in my experience.

So... what exactly is wrong with trying to change the prevailing culture? Either I can avoid doing activities that I enjoy because the prevailing culture is likely to be a hostile one, or I can aspire to a world in which enjoyment of the culture and enjoyment of the activity are aligned for the greatest number of people possible. So, I'm making a judgment call that my desire for a more friendly atmosphere outweighs the desire for the beefhead in front of me to call the ref a homo, but... well, it's pretty obvious which way maximum utility lies. On what planet would settling for the status quo be my only rational option?

Why doesn't The Herald have a 'thumbs down' option also?

Latest bugbear: why do mainstream papers allow comments on their news items at all? Barely anything anyone says ever adds to the story, it's just an echo-chamber for dicks. Just reinforces one-dimensional opinions. At least letters to the editor are curated.

Speaking up is a separate thing. You could see it going on, think it's not on, but be too afraid/uncomfortable to speak up. That gets back to Emma's point that in that situation people often don't feel safe enough to complain. It's hard to speak up to a group of usually drunk guys, "What you're doing isn't on." because there's always the risk they might get violent or simply more unpleasant.

...which is where formal policy comes in, on the part of the venue/event management. People will be more likely to speak up they feel they have support from an authority. In addition, the arseholes will be more likely to hold their tongues.
