  • Hard News: A bit tacky, no?,

"Which Headless Chickens? Fiona era or Rupert? I'd opt for the latter."

Are you suggesting Fiona's era be ignored for a reunion show? Their biggest hits came from this period. Flying nun's first (and only?) number 1 single. Not to mention one of the Nun's biggest selling albums.

Liam is a Man City fan so he hates Rooney anyway. He's probably doubly pissed off at the moment as his team's billionaire owner might now have trouble laying his hands on his billions.

  • Field Theory: Handle the Scandal,

"He dislocated his shoulder AND the bar hit him on the way down ---"

It was his elbow wasn't it? Despite being shielded by officials from the crowd, we at home were subjected to a slow motion replay. Even the commentator was complaining that we didn't need to see it again. I still feel a little ill thinking about it.

  • Hard News: Just Some Things,

Moe Tucker has always been a favourite of mine. She has a style that is totally in tune with the VU songs, and that's not easy.
At the other end of the scale, Dave Grohl on the QOTSA, "songs for the deaf" record (as someone mentioned earlier) is one of the great drumming records. If you are listening to "No one knows" in the car, there's a real chance you'll set off the airbag during the chorus.

  • Readers' Tips,

Another tip for readers. Always read the label and never assume anything.
Decided I needed to fix a paint scrape on my car and thought I'd do it myself rather than paying a professional. That was my first error. Two things I needed to buy were primer and paint. Went to Supercheap Autos ( it was the "autos" bit that attracted me) and purchased the items.
Anyway, fixed the scrape and looks good from about 200m. It's several days later now, and I've just read the instructions on the primer spray can. Turns out that, while it's suitable for use on a very long list of surfaces, at the end of the list it states "not recommended for automotive use" WTF!

  • Cracker: Fillerup,

I once test rode a new Peugeot 50cc scooter in at an Akld scooter shop that had the limiter removed. It was very fast, and would out accelerate most cars and stick with the traffic easily. Only weighed about 70kg. As I understand, it's pretty easy to get the limiter removed and you're probably unlikely to catch the eye of the law. Much safer than riding in the gutter at 50km/h with trucks sqeezing past you every 5 seconds.

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

The Territory is still bigger and thirstier than the Falcon which might be fine if you're using the 7 seats and the 4WD, but the fact that you can buy a 2WD Territory with 5 seats, speaks volumes about who is buying them and the manufacturers know it.
The other reason not to own a Territory (or similar) is the horrendous residual value slide that they are experiencing (same goes for the Falcon). Ok if it's a company car I guess.

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

"My favourite car for the Akld to Wgtn run was my escort sport. Not a massive car by any stretch of the imagination, weighing in at around 600kg all up. It did, however, have in addition to great handling, and pretty impressive performance, a phenomenal thirst, which put many friends larger cars to shame. Again, size and impact don't always line up."

If we are talking about modern small cars vs modern big cars then the thirst of the small one, no matter how hard you have to drive it up the hills, will be more modest than the larger car. Incidently, the Ford Ka has an Escort motor from the 60's that has been improved, but by no means as efficient as more modern engines, and on a recent trip where I drove from Napier to Wgtn in a modern 3L Maxima and returned in the Ka, the Ka used exactly half as much fuel as the Maxima.

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

"My personal hatred of idiots who insist on trying to drive the length of the country in underpowered toy cars, and who insist on impeding my progress along the way"

Now maybe I'm being a bit defensive here AS, but as someone who worked in the automotive trade for many years, knows a thing or two about cars and regularly drives between Napier and Auckland in a Ford Ka (I'm guessing this is a toy car in your eyes?), I really hate this attitude that drivers of big cars and SUVs carry around with them. They see my small car in front of them on the open road and just have to go past them regardless of what speed I'm doing, only to get in my way as soon as there are a few corners to negotiate. Your average SUV handles like the QEII. I know, I've driven most of them.
