  • Muse: The High Aesthetic Line, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

‘Gay’ does not mean you whisper and act like a pussy.

No, Steve, that's what dykes do on date night. As for the shit spray at writer Kate McDermott (disclosure: I'm a casual acquaintance): She's a better fucking writer than Witi Ihimaera, and I hope her ACC levy hasn't gone through the roof after handling such a load of tosh Mills & Boon would have rejected with extreme prejudice.

  • Muse: The High Aesthetic Line, in reply to Lea Barker,

Sigh! Local drama! I live in an audience area of 7 million people (the San Francisco Bay Area) and there is NO LOCAL DRAMA on television. I suspect that is the case in every metro area in the US unless it’s the locale of some network drama. (CSI Miami, for example.)

So, by all means be hard on local drama, but remember you’re blessed to have it.

True -- but here's another way to look at it. I'm really enjoying Boardwalk Empire (though there was no way it was ever going to live up to the hype), but before Terence Winter joined the Sopranos he earned a living, and learned his craft, on some truly heinous shows. The churn factor in Australian, US and British TV may be painful to endure, but good things do happen.

Also: racist Jar Jar. (Jar Jar : Me :: LOTR : Giovanni)

I can understand why Jar Jar won;t get get an NAACP Image Awards in this or any other galaxy, but was it strictly necessary for the eeevil Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray to sound like George Takei with a three pack a day habit?

“Hah, Pwin-sess Ama-da-wa, you WILL accept de-wivery of all the fake Gucci bags we can produce!!”

Hear that noise? It is a desk crying out in terror...

Thanks - one major FUBAR a day keeps the ego in check.

And I need to stress, Gentle Readers, that Russell is the entirely agreeable kind of mad.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit, in reply to Steve Parks,

I really liked Pi. The only other Aronofsky film I’ve seen is his second, Requiem for a Dream, which was overwrought, and not in a good way. I only liked it for Matthew Libatique’s cinematography and the score by Clint Mansell.

I'm not his biggest fan, but at least I walked out of The Fountain and The Wrestler and could be arsed trying to figure out exactly what pissed me off about them. (I think the major problem with The Fountain is that it was a project Aronofsky was passionately invested in through a rather turbulent production history, but never figured out a way to make it work on a much smaller scale than originally intended.) Most films nowadays, I've forgotten before I get back to the car afterwards.

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief, in reply to Emma Hart,

(My partner apparently spent the entire service watching to see Bear didn’t catch fire.)

Aww, no fun. A Viking farewell by teddy bear is just the leaven of chaos I'd like for my final bow.

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief, in reply to Danielle,

Look, can the human race find a cure for death already?

What a horrid thought - sorry if this is not the time or the place, but grief is a good and healthy thing. Wanting to wish away that all things have their time - and all things have their ending -- isn't, though it is so human.

When my Grandmother died, I got some rather triggering comments because my eyes were dry. I just couldn't see anything to cry about over a woman who had a long life, and a good one for the most part, but towards the end she was sick, tired and so desperately lonely. She'd outlasted her husband, all her siblings and most of her friends -- she was done.

WashTimes doubles down on the blood libel business:

M’kay… I think the auditions for the Dixie Chicks are being held down the hall. Don’t you just love people like Palin and Coulter going on their book tours and bitching about how their dissent is being “suppressed” by the New York media elite? Sorry, when you've got book deals -- and hefty promotional budgets -- with the two largest publishing houses in the English-speaking world, I'm not going to order the kegs for the pity party.

Damn. Well, that completely dashed the warms glow I got from last night’s assignation with Ms. Boganette – and Mr. Boganette, a Rageaholic and several other delightful people. The only way I’m dealing with this shit is having enough non-rectum people around like them, you, & the PAS Massive to keep the sanity account in credit.

Don’t say this enough: Thanks people. Even when you’re causing the death of innocent desks, you’re good people.
