  • Hard News: The Public Address Word of…, in reply to BenWilson,

Curious, I’ve always heard it as twotcock. Never even considered the other way, which I also never use on its own, it always seems more like UK slang to me.

That's why I always heard it as an "a" sound: "twat" seems a very British insult to me. In the same way, while I say "arse" rather than "ass", "jackass" can only ever be pronounced in the donkeyesque manner, since the concept is so thoroughly American.

"Twatock"? Is there a word to describe the acute embarrassment that comes from misspelling one's own word?

  • Hard News: The Public Address Word of…, in reply to Jackie Clark,

it was coined by one of our own

After I used "twatcock" and some others repeated it, I googled to check, and there have been instances of its use before, so I can't quite claim neological rights. However, I don't think it's ever achieved such sustained and resonant use as on PAS and now Twitter, and it never had the ideal combination of signifier and signified until it was used to describe P**l H***y.

can you provide a pronunciation guide please?

I definitely hear it with "a" as in "hat", but there's no definitive version.

I think it was Emma who suggested it goes best when preceded by the Batman theme: "Duhnuh duhnuh duhnuh duhnuh Duhnuh duhnuh duhnuh duhnuh ... Twatock!"

I made the mistake of googling it at work as well. Google tries to be helpful by separating it into its component words, but in this case it is not so helpful. Well, maybe it would be, but not at work.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

like the John Birch Society, the Tea Party movement receives significant financial backing from the wealthy Koch family

    Twatkochs.

America has high unemployment and low growth, independents want a change. They don't much care if its left or right wing.

And they're apparently still wedded to a belief in an American omnipotence that means a President can fix in a few months what a decade of financial lunacy has created. Ironically, I can almost understand the Tea Partiers' rage, since they're (a) bonkers and (b) never going to support Obama, but anyone who voted for Obama and then turns on him for not delivering miracles is really of sub-prime intelligence.

  • Up Front: Oh, Cock!,

In the design stakes they get, and should be more than happy with, sucked. The penis is practically designed to be sucked but not caressed.

Though I don't think you'll find anyone objecting to either.

  • Up Front: Oh, Cock!,

Isn't it awfully nice to have a penis?
Isn't it frightfully good to have a dong?
It's swell to have a stiffy.
It's divine to own a dick,
    From the tiniest little tadger
    To the world's biggest prick.
So, three cheers for your Willy or John Thomas.
Hooray for your one-eyed trouser snake,
Your piece of pork, your wife's best friend,
    Your Percy, or your cock.
You can wrap it up in ribbons.
You can slip it in your sock,
But don't take it out in public,
Or they will stick you in the dock,
    And you won't come back.
