  • Speaker: Part 22: Not the Last Post,

"We haven't finished third, have we? Is there a play-off?"

Well, technically speaking, you're right - I'm just claiming a moral right to 3rd place because we spanked the other losing semi-finalist

  • Speaker: Part 22: Not the Last Post,

    - "The world of cricket needs some serious re-thinking and reorganising before the next World Cup comes around." -

Hear hear, its been, by fairly common consent, a pretty disastrous tournament on and off the field (and on the off-shield subject - it seems to have gone all quiet on the Woolmer front - WTF is that all about)

And really, I'm no sports administrator, but how hard should it have been to run a cricket tournament in the Caribbean, arguably the spiritual home of cricket? - It should have been done in 2-3 weeks with lots of drums, trumpets, swaying booty & rum.

Instead it was Ireland and Bangladesh and empty stadia (no disrespect to their giant-killing exploits - one of the genuine on-field highlights).

Not overly disappointed in the Black Caps finishing 3rd because Sri Lanka and Australia are clearly better teams, but like many I was very disappointed at the below-par performances at the business end of the tournament - just have that nagging feeling that with a bit of luck and the team playing out of their skin that the Cup was there to be won.

  • Island Life: One sleep to go,

"I told my three year old the other day that the Mr Whippy van only plays the music when he's run out of ice cream ..."

Heeey, good idea! thanks for that Paul

  • Island Life: One sleep to go,

I'm fairly sure that our 7 year old (who thinks she is 14 - or at the least desperately wants to be 14) is suspicious of the existence of Santa, but I also think she has cottoned on that if she interrogates us too hard on the subject that the associated present flow may diminish somewhat.

"Hey: Clark's Commandos - that'd be a good name for something."

    Isn't that Trevor and Pete?

And, yes, it must have been Sue's Raleigh 20 - apologies for the implication that it might have been your (rather feminine) cycle of choice that I inherited.

And why haven't nomads come back into fashion?, along with black puffy nylon bomber jackets?

"i desperately wanted a 'Grifter', the cool proto-BMX of the day"

I wanted a Chopper, but I'm fairly sure (unless my memory fails me) that I got Andrew's old Raleigh 20 instead .......

  • Hard News: Art and the Big Guy,

    Good point Peter.

Just picking up on an earlier part of the thread, another way in which the market has found possible solutions to valuing future performance and allowing investment (for sport read art) the Freakonomics blog has a good link:

    http://biz.yahoo.com/weekend/jockexchange_1.html

Imagine artists being able to sell 20 percent of all future earnings to a trust, which would, in turn, sell securities to the public investment market (probably no good for those artists who are way ahead of their time).

  • Hard News: Art and the Big Guy,

"Which brings the thread to the often considered question "What is art?""

And just as importantly from the commercial/financial perspective, 'who is the artist'?

To torture the sports analogy a little more, while professional sports organisations seem to have cracked a market solution to future value, its usually to the benefit of the clubs, not the player (who I would consider the 'artist')

  • Stories: Life in Books,

"I was at my lowest losing my mind and someone passed me a book called 'Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway' by Susan Jeffers."

Actually - speaking of self-help books, and apologies to Susan Jeffers, but that reminds me the book that hands-down saved me the most money, and quite possibly some time at the back end, is the Allen Carr Quit Smoking Book.

Thanks Allen (wherever you are) .....

  • Hard News: Art and the Big Guy,

"If the purchasers of your early vintages onsold them tomorrow for 25 times what you sold them for then, should you as the original winemaker get a slice of that increased market value?"

Heh - should at least get a taste :)
