  • Southerly: That CERA Rumour, in reply to Lilith __,

Perhaps Auckland differs from Chch in that way? Here, some of the older suburbs are costly to live in, and some (like where I am) are really cheap.

Nah - not that much. Russell knows better than I (it being his backyard and all), but I think it would be fair to say that gentrification hasn't come to a halt, it's just moved on a little. And that's not actually a bad thing for all the snark I do about the Herald being the Hustler of property porn. Gentrification has saved more of our "built heritage" from the ever-shifting tides of architectural fashion that we'd like to admit.

  • Hard News: Friday Fever,

I was impressed by AA Gill’s session at the Auckland Readers and Writers Festival

I was rather pissed off that I could only attend one session this year (cash flow and prior engagements), but it was a doozy. ATC staged a wonderful (and free) reading of John Guare’s Six Degrees of Separation, with a lively discussion headlined a Victor Roger. I still can’t understand why this play has never had a profession production in New Zealand, apart from the large cast.

BTW, did every interview with Gill have to bring up that damn baboon? If you're looking for case studies in Gillesque prickery you're hardly stuck for choice...

What's the deal with transport in 2009? It shoots up by over 10x 2008's budget.

Yeah, I'm pretty all the rail infrastructure work and new rolling stock could have been put on layby and/or constructed by slave labour...

That’s rather than removing the recent personal tax cuts from the wealthiest, or reversing massive ETS subsidies to farmers and truckies. All choices, no matter what English, Joyce and Key might want voters to believe.

Of course, anyone who says there is no alternatives is just lying 99.9% of the time. But I must admit to being somewhat amused at the way the road to Damascus has turned into an eight lane highway – blithe Keynesians have become rabid deficit hawks, and passed plenty of traffic going the other way. I suspect there’s plenty of sincere changes of heart, as well as a good measure of opportunistic concern trolling with both eyes on the polls and focus groups. Interesting times, indeed.

Pagani agrees (though I’m not convinced that’s a good thing).

A good rule of thumb is that if Pagani thinks you're on the right track, you should go out behind the barn and shoot yourself in the head.

  • Hard News: Some Lines for Labour, in reply to Sacha,

Absolutely nothing that his audience wouldn't have wanted to hear, and who the fuck thinks "fairness" is a bad thing? :Let's see the promised "affordable, fully-costed policy" before elevating Cunliffe to the thinking man's Beiber, shall we? Because the last time Labour tried, even that well-known Rogernome Brian Easton was calling bullshit on the numbers. Labour can't afford to do that again, and shouldn't be allowed to.

But sure, that sounds like due process. It doesn’t make me agree with the people of that town, though.

No. Just as I wouldn't really want to live anywhere that classes some drunk pissing in public (which we can all agree is gross and unsanitary) as sexual offending -- especially if we ever end up with the kind of compulsory sex offender registration that makes Garth McVicar jizz in his pants.

  • Southerly: That CERA Rumour, in reply to Megan Wegan,

Oh, no, I am employing a tone. Mainly because I hate massive subdivisions full of cookie-cutter houses and manicured lawns.

So do I -- then again, I can't afford to live in a massively over-leveraged "character" villa in a chi-chi suburb that used to be slum not that long ago, and I'm too fucking lazy to spend every spare hour gardening so the handkerchief sized patch of scrub outside my window works fine.
