The underlying problem is that, to be bunt, New Zealanders don’t know shit about China. And a large part of the blame for that lies at National’s door.
Unfortunate that no other party thought it useful to do this. Although Labour did venture into the language issue.

It's already known what he was doing in those 16 years.
The implied allegation is he's currently disloyal to NZ.
There doesn't seem to be any evidence other than guilt by association.

If one wants to get ahead in China then there's probably little option other than to work within the Party system.
This guy eventually chose to make a life somewhere where opportunity isn't so tightly controlled.
I don't think he deserves to be hounded in a Chinese sounding names manner.

If there is a swing then most likely it is to with tax.
If you're retired and had listened to Cullen re saving and investing for your retirement then a land tax is going to sound like a change in the rules that wipes away all your plans.

It's not just tax though. Ardern is also being rather vague on immigration and the TPP. That starts to look like avoidance of difficult issues.
It's easy enough to promise spending money but not every issue can be solved quite so simply.

There’s a well established network of gangs trading in weed and P. Not hard to see how that flow of trade works geographically.
Any idea what those specific risks are?
The risks of THC, opiates, E and psychedelics are mainly minor and to the user. They can be mitigated by harm reduction based on quality control and addiction treatment.
P’s main and common side effect is a paranoid rage that places others in serious risk. Lives are being destroyed by P in a ways that other drugs simply do not do because of the very nature of the drug effects.
I’m perfectly fine with heroin being legal and there being a regulated supply as the effects of heroin on the user and others are relatively benign. No one gets cut up with swords.
I’ve seen people come off various drugs. There’s nothing more frightening or heart rendering than watching someone come off a P binge. It is truely the worst type of experience. And then they will have to face the damage they have done to their life, friends and family.

Gangs do play a major role in pushing P into already vulnerable communities.
P is unlike most other drugs in terms of its risks and those making and distributing are knowingly selling misery.
Bennett was wrong to talk of people having less rights but the strategy of coming down hard on manufacture and supply while providing more resources for the victims makes sense to me.
I'm in favour of legalisation and controlled supply of most drugs . But P has specific risks that put it outside of a purely harm management strategy.

Having just watched the leaders debate Ardern wants to cut immigration because she's concerned about immigrants.
Why cut immigration when you can make life easier for immigrants.
Refugees often face a hard life. The answer isn't to decrease the number of refugees.
