Not quite true. He probably gets some kind of performance bonus for just that.

At least here there are voices of reason that can and do show the speculation to be just that. At Granny's house, on the other hand,.....

To be fair, I think Matthew may have been referring to the posts by those querying why the rescue team had not gone in already

    @Steve

Sorry you feel that way. [You know, in the same way celebs are sorry if others take offence at their drivel.]

I wouldn’t have volunteered to do rescue work if I didn’t have a passion for my fellow human beings, even if some of them are thick as sh*t.

Seems plenty of logic in most posts. Yours, I am less sure of.

If you mean lacking com passion because we don’t advocate running in all guns blazing, then you really don’t get it. Do you think rescue teams think “We can’t go in, oh well, what’s on telly?”

On second thoughts, I’m not really sorry at all.

And as someone who has been trained for rescue work (albeit of a type completely different from mining) the first thing drummed into us was not to put ourselves in danger. Any risk that cannot be readily contained and avoided is likely to mean we don't go in.

As for it being the job, as someone pointed out upthread, the job is to help people - and you can't do that if you are incapacitated.

Do you actually know how much water the robot encounterd? Or anything about the conditions the robot encountered?

Not sure that Grey District Mayor Kokshorn exactly covered himself with glory with this question, either

"I'm only a lay person, my first thoughts were why didn't it have a bit of gladwrap over it.

No prizes for guessing which outfit thought that was a comment worthy of publication.

Given that the Herald can say this in a headline:

Interest rates to rise if credit rating hiked

and then follow it immediately with

Standard and Poor's has put the country on notice of a possible downgrade to its credit rating - which would be likely to raise interest rates across the board - unless it reduces its reliance on imported savings.

does it surprise anyone that there is tendency toward poorly thought out reporting when the editorial function is so bad?

Road sharing is the way forward.

    Indeed.

    A couple of thoughts.

    1) Visibility and expectation. If motorists consciously or subconsciously expect there to be cyclists, they ought to be more cautious. My guess is this would avert the bulk of vehicle/cycle accidents that were the fault of the motorist. We may not yet be at the critical mass where motorists expect cyclists as a matter of course and how we handle this "transition" is key.

    2) Was trying to understand why otherwise "safe" (for want of a better word) motorists take risks around cyclists even when they have seen the cyclist. Is there some kind of expectation that although cyclists have a right to use the road, some motorists also expect cyclists not to be slower than the vehicular traffic? Thus they get frustrated and do reckless things.

Maybe we need to know the proportion of cyclists who were at fault didn't know the road code? Could well be that they did and simply ignored it.

Practically speaking, in terms of addressing the number of serious accidents involving cyclists, is mandatory testing of cyclists going to the best bang for the buck?
