I saw those 5 laptops there earlier in the day, during Cults. Not sure if they were directly involved in M83's performance.

Ah. I thought I saw them being brought on, maybe they were just moving them. Anyway, my comment mostly still stands; perhaps Gonzales really was controlling everything from his little mixing desk on stage, but it really didn't look like it.

    M83

were a lot of fun, but I find it a bit jarring to see a performance by (essentially) an electronic act where they're pretending to play the songs live. Sure, the guitars, drums and keyboards were real enough, but the majority of the sound was clearly coming from the guy hiding in the corner with the rack of 5 (5!) Macbooks. I thought Kraftwerk got it right a couple of years ago - four guys with laptops right there on stage.

    Laneway, singular.

  • Hard News: The Mega Conspiracy, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

Since it’s a bit difficult to test (ahem) the functionality now, was it possible to search for content if you didn’t have the URL? Say I’d like to download the new Tintin-movie and I make the assumption that it exists on MegaUpload, could I search for it? Or would I need to ask someone in a forum for a link to it?

MegaUpload didn't have a search engine itself, but various content in it was indexed by external sites. Usually one might search for something on one of the big meta-indexing sites, which would then show a list of links to file locker sites with matching content, one (or more) of which would be a MegaUpload URL.

  • Hard News: The Mega Conspiracy, in reply to Russell Brown,

Also, I believe that their ‘safe harbour’ relies on them not knowing what was there until advised by content owners – if they were posting multiple links to a file,

This is what intrigues me. Does anyone really believe YouTube management has no idea it’s hosting potentially infringing content until explicitly advised by the owners?

“Knowing there is infringing content” and “Knowing what it is” are different things. IIRC there are reports that the Feds have messages between Megaupload employees discussing in detail the particular content uploaded by new premium members. I obviously don’t know if this is true; and if true, I don’t know if it’s legally sufficient (the obvious question, how would Megaupload employees know that the uploader doesn’t have the legal authority to distribute Game_Of_Thrones_s1_complete_1080p.rar?), but it would be one step more dubious than simply vaguely knowing that there’s probably infringing content somewhere.

Everyone keeps talking about how photogenic cats are - my two will almost never perform when cameras are around. But here's where I found our little one, Thomasina, when I came home last night.

Gah, I don't have many good cat photos at work (and even my best are sadly lacking in this exalted company). But here is one I call "Angry Birds, contented cat", featuring Neil Young and Claudia (human).

  • Capture: Flash Cars, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

They had an overrunning clutch, which is something I have never come across in another car.

My father's DKW F102 had one. They were common on cars which had (or, in the case of later Saabs, were descended from cars which had) 2-stroke engines, for a couple of reasons: 1) A large (~ 1l) 2-stroke on the overrun is rough and noisy, and you don't want that roughness transmitted through the drivetrain if you can help it; 2) a large 2-stroke uses enough fuel as it is, thanks very much, and letting it wind down to idle speed every time you take your foot off helps mitigate this somewhat; and 3) older premix-lubricated 2-strokes could become oil-starved if the throttle was closed while the engine continued to run faster than idle. Not sure why Saab persisted on their earlier 4-strokes. Habit?

Just in case you wanted to know.</cargeek>
