They are a business, not a public service

Yet we used to regulate broadcast licenses to reflect some basic public service expectations. Other nations still do. No reason we can't also turn away from this thread of the 'free-market' experiment. However I agree that's not the landscape right now. If Weldon's job is just to get MediaWorks ready for sale and he's relying on Christie for advice, I'm not expecting much.

We (the broad and general we) proclaim that we want important and noble TV… But then we (the broad one again) don’t watch it.

As citizens it's good to know the checks and balances journalism is meant to provide are there, even if it's only for other people to read and act on. We don't all need to be involved at the same level to value it.

So, if ratings aren’t important to “reality” shows, why are they so important when CL is considered?

Because the opportunity for tasty product placement deals is scarcer in current affairs. Putting one sponsor's product all over their intro and promo clips is about the best CampbellLive can offer.

What I’m saying is some people disbelieve Dirty Politics, some people vote National and some people watch Seven Sharp.

and their broadcasting needs are already being well served.

I don’t understand why a body like NZ On Air can’t replace the work that these public broadcasters do by funding appropriate shows.

Because under its current model, commercial broadcasters decide which shows get made. That's what needs to change.

Sadly all TV in this country lives and dies by the ratings.

Because of our chronic lack of investment in public broadcasting, yes. I see the privatised Heartland channel is ending soon too. Even free is not cheap enough.

I do. I watch it most nights.

Same. And they know it, hopefully. Not that it shows in the 'ratings' their bosses are relying on. The trust generated by a show like this has a halo effect on the whole operation they're part of.

It would be incredible small-mindedness to not take that into account. Given the calibre of recent management appointments, I'm not filled with confidence.
