  • Hard News: A thing that rarely ends well,

Just when I was thinking about voting National... the last few weeks of nonsense have turned me right off.

I just can't imagine Key round a table at APEC or whatever. Shame, because he's an intelligent, well meaning bloke. So clearly not intended for Politics...

BTW, I hope there isn'y anyone from the citylet of Arbitrageur or Vivo suggesting that Auckland joints are swanky?

  • Hard News: Not so much ironic as outrageous,

There are all sorts of reasons why some people have to remain anonymous - e.g. people in certain industries are specifically barred by contract from attributable public comment (anonymity is generally the friend of free speech, such as when voting...)

    Wow, three of us!

I guess I get a bit beaten down (living on Waiheke, where it would seem 70% of the population miss the good ol days when the journey to town took 3 hours and there were no toilets and you had to pack sandwiches and if the Baroona took on water you just threw a few pensioners over the side and getting sick was for POOFS because there were no Westpac helicopter and rickets were frife but we didn't care and the flogging my father gave me every morning never did me any harm... spam spam spam spam spam spam) tell that to kids these days and they won't believe you.

As the only supporter of a waterfront stadiaum in AKL, I thought that setting it up so liners could berth on 3 sides, docking to a bright, airy, open multi-level atrium fitted with all the facilites etc., surrounded a wonderful open boulevard where the public of Auckland could mingle with passengers who have passed through a discrete but sensible MAFF check, perhaps taking in the ground level galleries and cafes... oh well

Once again destroyed by petty Aucklanders who take 60 years to finish a motorway junction, 100 years to build a station in the town centre, endelssly whine about having (amongst) the lowest rates in the country, pass out at the thought of pedestrianising their (theoretical) main street, and think that expanding a mollusc of an obsolete stadium built slap in the middle of a residential area, miles from main arteries for (and you read it here first) I'll bet what comes in at $400m was a good idea...

    <giant sigh>

  • Island Life: More time with the family,

I never did homework while at skool.

Won't be making my offspring do it either. Don't want to start sending those stupid protestant work ethic crap signals.

  • Hard News: Make you crazy like datura,

Is it me, or has The Herald become very tabloid in the last year or so? Yesterday I went thru my Reader page, deleting all the NZH feeds and (wince) replaced them with Stuff.

The headlines are what got to me in the end:

"Poisoned Berries blah blah" when what it turned out to be was "Poisonous berries..." - very different meanings.

"Ear flicking man in court" when what the meant was "Man charged with assault on two children" (and his defence is that he flicked ears).

Clearly they are simply tweaking words for headlines, which all papers do, but they just seem to have crossed a line from "finessing" to "blatant bullshit".

Has some strine done one of those "we need edge, pazazz, SEX" type of speaches so beautifully parodied in so many satirical shows and movies?

Looking forward to electronic paper so I can subscribe to The Guardian (and I NEVER thought I'd ever type those words).

Maybe I'm just getting old. The grammar is winding me up nowadays too (it's 15 items or FEWER, not LESS you semi educated half-wits ;-) ... is there a pill I can take to stave off Grumpy Old Sod syndrome?

  • Hard News: Media 7,

Nice move. I shall look forward to it.

Guess I've got no excuse. Have to get a TV now. And a freevee thingy. Need to save my bandwidth for other things.

  • Hard News: There's Always One,

I notice Ron Marks has given in to temptation and said screening is required.

Another example of why membership of any of the forces automatically disqualifies you from managing policy.

  • Hard News: There's Always One,

A friend just forwarded this to me... suggests we all send it. Not a bad idea?

    Dear Mr Duynhoven

As a frequent traveler I wished to support your calm response to todays incident, and urge that you not be panicked into unnecessary increases in the security theatre that is currently acted out at airports.

I understand the international context that leads to the current situation, and can only imagine how hard it will be to resist without pointing out that the screening we have is only marginally effective, but I am sure it can be done!

  • Hard News: There's Always One,

I'd like to think the passengers did what was necessary - restrained the person until landing.

All the security checks are meaningless. We have to take responsibility as passengers.

As I now have a large piece of titanium screwed into me I'm not looking forward to the next xray...
