Labour is only saved from similar criticism by their incompetence not their intent.
Danyl ponders whether that is a permanent state of affairs.
The Conservative Party’s strategy in the UK election was pretty much the same as National’s strategy last year. It’s because they have the same strategic advisers of course – the infamous Crosby/Textor, who are also very active in Australian Federal and state elections.
Which gives their clients a huge advantage. Not only can they deliver data and market-research driven advice, they can trial-run lines and strategies across multiple separate-but-similar electorates, hone the techniques and sell successful ideas on to their other clients – who are all right-wing parties that want to see each other succeed.

Journalists can only be held accountable for the outcomes you describe if they have failed to inform the public of the facts, their meaning, implications and context
Are you saying that's not the case here? I have great respect for what informed citizens decide. That requires, as you say, reliable information.

rather than being shepherded into a monopolistic NASC
How do you think the size of each person's funding package is determined under EGL?

Phil Kitchin (our last print journo dedicated to investigative work) has left the building and gone over to Ministerial PR for Paula Bennett.
and people wonder why she did so well on this last weekend's Q&A show.

Wonder if NZonAir funding the investigative aspects of TV3's '3D' programme this year is a model across media more broadly?
Let commercial media run its Glucinas and Hoskings without any 'journalistic' pretensions (or protections, in my view). Use targetted public funding for the expensive, non-lucrative journalism that commercial media is inscreasingly shunning?

I imagine increasing ORS funding to meet true demand would expose a lack of trained workforce capacity, that sort of thing.
Rigid bureaucratic frameworks that demand a full plan before execution may catch some of those implications but they are just not agile enough to respond to the complexity as it unfolds, and they waste precious resources and goodwill.

She did. Here’s her producer’s take on the matter.

Generosity of interpretation is not warranted here. The consistency between Bridges’ and Key’s lines (and Brownlee and Joyce’s before that) tells us this is no accident; it’s a planned tactic involving lying about figures, knowing that most of our media will regurgitate them unchecked without the slightest qualms. Currie would be a prime example.
The immorality of editors and publishers allows the immorality of politicians to flourish. Who wins from that?

Beautifully explained, thank you. I have been disgusted by the failure of NZ journalism to address its obvious failings in the light of #dirtypolitics.
Saying so on Twitter has led to a few journos blocking me, and others complaining that how dare the public hold them accountable to the standards of their profession and their role in our society.
How did your audience respond to the speech, Keith?
