  • So what happens this time?,

It's on. The mid-term elections in the world's weirdest democracy are here. Will it be a Democratic rout or did the polls tighten enough for the Republicans? Will the fake robo-calls at 3am tactic work for the Republicans? Is the Senate out of the question for the Dems? What are the Dems about anyway? Who should the American public be glad to see the back of? Will the machines work? Gather at our mid-terms forum on Public Address system to follow the progress, share links and pontificate like it was your real job. We thank you in advance for your wit, enterprise and courtesy.

  • Shortland Street,

Nice to see that scorching post again Tze Ming. Still, an Asian horse has just won the Melbourne Cup for the first time, which might be a small win for diversity.

Did his trainer tell him he was a good horse in Japanese? A horse that understands Japanese. Cool.

But seriously, waddaya reckon of the Chinese family in Outrageous Fortune? Have the former Shorty writers there got it right second time?

And I think one real innovation relevant to the topic was the introduction of the first big-time Pacific Island characters early on. It happened against a backdrop of urban cultural emergence for a generation of PI kids, and I think it had a resonance because of that. It's funny that Samoans, who now top charts and appear in top-rating shows, were largely invisible in the media up till then.

  • Stink Bro,

For the shows quality does any one know if the frame by frame work is done here or wage slaved off shore?

It's done in Korea, I think.

Either way whoever mastered the show to a DV codec for analog broadcast should be shot. Aliased lines are so second year polytec maaaaaan.

    Yay. Video geekery.

  • Island Life: Mother, We've Been Goosed,

Hold the phone. The PM is quoted on Checkpoint as saying things have "moved on" from the Bledisloe site. The speculation is now on nearby land, but surely Carlaw Park - and remember where you heard that first - must be under consideration too.

Damn. There goes my vow to never agree with Cameron Brewer about anything.

  • Flatting life in NZ in the 80s.,

Yo RB. I know my formatting is shite, A simple waqy to avoid such mistakes is to simply change the formatting instuctions from quote to block quote. I though that this custom tag was a means to add quotation marks, not an indented quote. My mistake - sorry.

De nada. The guys decided to use wiki-style formatting rather than allow any real HTML, which counts out the "blockquote" tag. I thought we had your post back, but it doesn't seem to de displaying yet.

Yep, the annoying scrollbars thing is a Firefox 1.0 issue - fix soon, hopefully.

I think the 26 house was built by the guy that founded readymix concrete and it had weird invisible flatmates. heard decades later that the guys daughter had some murder/suicide thing with her "coloured" lover/servant.

Ooh. Do you reckon that might be what the Victor Dimisich Band song 'Native Waiter' is about?

    Don't look now/You might be dead ...

  • Climate change day of action,

The climate change denial culture, ironically, reminds me of the anti-GE movement online, in that you see the same tropes go around and around, even after the majority of scientists have done with them and moved on.

Example: Christopher Monckton's piece for the Telegraph. The right-wing blogosphere has been all over it, and you'd think Monckton was a scientist himself. He's actually a journalist and former Thatcher spin doctor. He depicts the study that attacked the Mann et al "hockey stick" theory (McIntyre et al) as the last word on the matter, but it only takes a few minutes to discover that it's not. The major NAS study earlier this year basically endorsed Mann, but Mockton doesn't even mention it.

Ironically, it seems there are some valid scientific criticisms of the Stern report - but the one that's getting all the airtime isn't among them.

    Aarggh! Sorry!

I was just about to do my moderator thing and tidy up some formatting in Mr Crappy's excellent post about the Red House and I hit "Delete" instead of "Edit"!

I've lodged a call with the CactusLads to find out where posts go when dumbass moderators accidentally delete them ...

But yeah, good point anyway: we need people like Stuart Page to get on and upload some gems.

  • Hard News: Something up with Apple?,

This just in from a "worker bee" at Renaissance:

Yep we are indeed losing our apple.co.nz email addresses here at Renaissance. we've not been given any worthwhile explanation as to why it's happening, except it's to strengthen the Renaissance brand. That sounds like bollocks to me, but I just work here. Perhaps something exciting may be in the works? Apple division hit $100M revenue last year, some have suggested that might be the magic number when Apple Inc get interested in the local market. But seems unlikely. Still no goss regarding the iTunes music store.

It's kind of funny that a $100m market might be too piddly for Apple corporate ...
