Well, there’s a fucking great leather couch at the camp site! These peeps are in their 40’s.

I'd assumed that the scarfie penchant for torching sofas was a kind of youthful ritual rejection of middle class values. Seems that it may be more deeply rooted in the collective subconscious than I'd guessed. Anyway I wouldn't want to be downwind of a burning leather one.

Thought the couch conveyed this also. Everything being a tad odd.

Wonderful shot Sofie. Should any stray scarfies happen to visit Kaitaia, the sight of that couch would have them slavering with frustrated lust.

usually parasites aren’t dumb enough to kill the host…

Who'd have thunk that in the aftermath of our biggest ever natural disaster we'd see such self-absorption and rank opportunism? As plenty of others have already pointed out, the self-serving faux corporate overlay of government is a great lark until it hits a bump, when it's shown to be utterly blind to its own shortcomings.

I remember a story from an Australian journalist who travelled to Tokyo following the "Asian economic meltdown" of the late 90s. He was met at the Airport by a government official and his wife. As they were travelling on an elevated motorway into the city he remarked on a tent town in a park below, where people who'd been made homeless by bank foreclosures were camped. The official's wife assured him that they were there voluntarily, because they enjoyed a taste of the outdoor life. The thing that he found trully bizarre is that she appeared to really believe it.

Thanks Ian, with so many opportunities being presented by these clowns I'm like the proverbial one-legged man in an arse-kicking contest.

In last week’s Christchurch Mail Bob Parker claimed that retaining Council CEO Tony Marryatt was of “crucial importance”:

If you want to destroy this organisation right now, if that was your goal, you would get rid of the chief executive, which would decimate your general managers, which would pull the heart out of this organisation’s ability to do it’s job

Parker defended moving the Council’s call centre to Palmerston North as a form of insurance against a future disaster. Yet there are no backup plans should he from whose presence we draw light and life be hit by a hypothetical bus.

. . . why on earth would an old person get the hump over a comparison btwn a festival and an old dog?

Because it's an ageist stereotype that the 'elderly' have nothing better to do than get the hump?

Old people envy the young all their vigor and rhythm
Soon they'll be dead and they want to take everyone with 'em
With their leathery skin and their shriveled old underwear too
They're stuck in the past and they'll never do anything new

Young people always get hot when there's something to say
Senior citizens got us in this mess today
Apples and pears when they're ripe they fall down from the trees
Old people cling on to life like some kind of disease

Old people, they make young people scream
Old people, they make young people lay down and die

    Robyn Hitchcock, Young People Scream

The older I get, the more I like that song :-)

I find that PP really low level

Breathtakingly petty, though if the Chch City Council is any indication that kind of siege mentality is standard procedure in present-day corporatised bureaucracies. Employment of unqualified relatives by EQC management, and lucrative contracts for people from outside the region with no particularly relevant skills, were two festering issues uncovered by The Press.

    Where to start?

Um, if nepotism was all the go at The Press the EQC would have been all over it in their Powerpoint presentation?

. . . he was a very good friend to dear Mahinaarangi.

It's funny how they're both gone, but Papa Will Survive sounds - in my memory - as hope-filled as ever.
