  • Hard News: Television and the Public Good, in reply to Kumara Republic,

In fact, SPADA has openly called for NZ On Air appointments to be bi-partisan.

I'd like someone to ask Penelope Borland exactly what she means by that. To be utterly cynical, political hacks acceptable to both National and Labour would have even more reason to pass on a funding pitch for anything even vaguely politically contentious. But, hey, Binge Drinking Masterchefs Border Patrol Highways shouldn't upset anyone, right?

On the other hand, by raising a complaint about the child poverty documentary the way he did, McIlrea put himself under scrutiny as a political appointee, so my sympathy for him is very limited indeed.

I'd agree with you there, but McIllrea has a damn sight more pertinent professional experience than a good number of political appointments.

Let’s see what the police have to say, shall we?

I'm not excessively confident that the Police will take this any more seriously than previous referrals from the Electoral Commission, but I think even the most fervent conpiracy theorist would grant that's been an issue for a very long time - and National has hardly been the only beneficiary.

I don't do Twitter for this very reason.

This might be a completely insane idea, but my bullshit filter works reasonably well. Well enough to watch a documentary about child poverty with a clear agenda (or one about Whanau Ora) without drooling. Shame our political lords and masters don't really think the same, isn't it?

Yes I am talking about shutting it down and placing the funds elsewhere.

As I Tweeted (only half-facetiously) perhaps we should cut the middleperson bullshit and directly fund the National and Labour parties to produce ideologically acceptable documentaries that don’t confuse our feeble prole-brains.

  • Hard News: Television and the Public Good,

Labour yesterday renewed calls for John Key’s electorate chairman Stephen McElrea to quit the NZ On Air board after documents showed he backed $299,963 of cash for a documentary on the controversial Whanau Ora scheme.

FFS… Perhaps NZoA should just call everyone’s bluff and invite every political party to submit lists of unacceptable documentary subjects. At least it would make the political interference explicit instead of passive-aggressive.

Indeed. Hey one grain of good to come out of the sad horrible perfect shit storm is that it might just prompt the Council to get into “less hui, more do-ee” mode. Bart’s totally right that nobody wants to be back here in a year doing the same WTF? barn dance, with only the names being different.

  • Hard News: Staying Alive, in reply to John Armstrong,

In the context of this discussion can I suggest that you take a deep breath before posting stuff like this too? Are you really surprised when others respond with a bit of heat?

In the context of Bart accusing me of saying Bishop was responsible for her own death and thinking it’s OK for drivers to engage in dangerous behaviour – both of which would be astoundingly callous, ignorant and "bitch, please"-worthy things to say. I didn't. Thought I was pretty damn calm, especially when Bart doubled down and then went on to seriously misrepresent what Russell said as well.

It would have been really nice if you and Ian were here getting your Miss Manners on when Bart was throwing that around.

  • Hard News: Staying Alive, in reply to Steve Barnes,

Has nobody pointed out the fact that light rail vehicles travel on, well, rails? bit hard to “turn left” I would have thought.
As with much legislation in this country the drafters were lacking in practical experience I think.

Without going back to said legislation, I think trams would meet the definition of "light rail vehicles. Personally, that's one of many respects in which I wouldn't mind Auckland being a lot more like Melbourne but IMO and YMMV of course. (And, yes, being a complete nitwit of a tourist it was more good luck than good management I didn't get wiped out by a tram on my first visit. "Don't be a dick" and "pay attention, 'cause it's not all about you" are fine principles for pedestrians too. :) )

  • Hard News: Staying Alive, in reply to Bart Janssen,

So you can have your rational discussion about a needless deaths that will be repeated. Personally I’m comfortable about not being rational about such things.

Yeah, OK, Bart. I’m not particularly comfortable with you offensively misrepresenting my views and basically being called a distract troll for even suggesting that there are plenty of cyclists who could stand to be more considerate road users. It came damn close to being a lot more serious than a mild concussion and a half dozen stitches, but whatevs right?

But, hey, you don’t care, I’ve got better things to do & others are conducting a more useful reality-based discussion.

  • Hard News: Staying Alive, in reply to Bart Janssen,

Are you arguing that asking a driver to take that level of care to protect another human is unreasonable?

FFS, Bart, in this specific case Glenn Becker was charged with a criminal offense for which he could have ended up in prison. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, I’m sure both Becker & Bishop would have done things very differently. (Take a really deep breath before you go nuclear again, Bart – please.) It is unreasonable to remember we’re also discussing a human being here, and you’re making a lot of assumptions about his conduct that the prosecution couldn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt?.

Also, it’s really not helping a rational discussion when you get so damn hostile and defensive at the merest suggestion that it’s not always a case of “two wheels good, four wheels bad”. A careless idiot on a bike and a careless idiot in a car doing the same can burn in the same circle of hell, AFAIC.

(You really don't want to start this heavy public transport user on the fuck-wittery of cyclists and drivers who seem to think it's OK to cut in on a fully loaded bus, because they can brake on a dime. Whole other rant...)
