Mediawatch covered this today here. Would have appreciated a hat-tip, but my ego will survive. :)

  • Hard News: Friday is for all the things, in reply to Paul Williams,

In my very limited experience, Scandanavian people tend to have an oddily American accent.

In my equally limited experience, they don't have "American" accented English but the cut-glass diction is delightful. (A major reason why I know all the lyrics to a disturbing number of Abba songs.)

  • Hard News: It's In the Kete!, in reply to Kumara Republic,

I am reminded of a (maybe Northern) Chinese quote that says the Cantonese eat anything on four legs that isn’t a table, and anything that flies that isn’t an airplane.

My culinary m.o during our three days in Hong Kong next month will be "If it looks appetizing go for it, and what you don't know will neither kill you nor make you look like an obnoxious gwailo tourist". (Which I am, truth be told - but there's no need to put out on the first date.) :)

And yes, there is an argument to be made that some culturally esteemed foods were originally for the poverty-stricken.

In a lot of cases, it's not even really a matter for argument as just knowing your cultural/culinary history. Haggis might sound fucking revolting, but if you had to raise (or as likely track down and kill) every gram of protein you ate why the hell wouldn't it be simple prudence to figure out a way to preserve, eat or otherwise use everything. Even the "nasty bits". Being one bad season away from starvation is a wonderful spur to creativity.

That’s cool, but you won’t mind if differ.
    :)

Go to, but I'm with Russell here. Frankly, this was about as much as Shayne Currie was going to sign off on without very strongly worded legal advice. And if this dodgy figure is out of circulation at The Herald, I'd say it's a bigger win than Russell might.

The big story is how Joyce is not being questioned over his intentional misuse of figures to ditch TVNZ 7.

Perhaps you're making a presumption not in evidence there. I don't actually find it beyond the realm of possibility that a bad number got into circulation and nobody bothered to double double check it. Becuase civil servants never get their sums wrong, right?

For the record, I don't find incompetence any more endearing than malice.

Fairfax is only slightly better, but why don’t they just resurrect the Auckland Star?

Short answer: Starting a credible metropolitan daily from scratch would require a very large initial outlay and the ability to sustain years of red ink. However much I'd like it to, don't think the Fairfax Group has the ability - let alone the will - to do that .

It’s probably not cheap as such

No, but I'm reasonably sure it's going to be cheaper, and more entertaining, than New Zealand's Got Talent. And not a penny of it going to under-write Simon Cowell's next personality by-pass. :)

It’s not a matter of any kind of vendetta.

And none from my end, either. Nothing but sincere up-snaps for Herrick and Barry Hill for owning their mistake and undertaking to correct it and I'll be taking the time to make sure they hear that directly.

I keep challenging The Herald to be better because it has an effective monopoly in the largest newspaper market in the country. There are also plenty of very talented, honourable people there who deserve a paper that's consistently at their level.

Golly, so a time-tested and (spectacularly successful) local format gets a classy yet (I suspect) cost-effective re-boot.

TVNZ take notes, is all I'll say.

While Govt propaganda gets six-figure NZ On Air subsidies courtesy of con- NEC-tions.

OK, I'm only going to say this this once. Other blogs we shall not name may not give a shit about publishing defamatory comments. I do. A lot.

Please consider whether you want to push this any further, and adjust course accordingly.
