  • Hard News: NZME and you, in reply to James Littlewood*,

Funny thing was NZOA chose not to fund news or current affairs, precisely because those genres attracted sufficient ad revenue to pay their own way.

How long will that last? I guess we're now well on the way to filing news under "special interest."

They've funded '3D Investigates' - which has not been enough to prevent it moving from the Sunday 6.30 slot to Monday 9.30pm. Perhaps eyeballs at the same time is too crude a measure of value.

As far as I can tell, there’s a Google ad at the top of this page right now. It’s, unsurprisingly, an ad for a news site, Scoop.

Nope. Tis from Scoop's ad-serving network; Public Address is a member.

That's probably fine if you trust what the PM says about what he's been doing

Which is not the standard of oversight we should expect from any important public office - yet it is increasingly what we are getting from a variety of them.

  • Speaker: Are we seeing the end of MSM,…,

Relevant event in Wellington soon, via Jan Rivers:

    Conference Invitation
People who are in, or can get to Wellington on the weekend of 9 & 10 October – 3 weeks away would enjoy Information, ethics and the public good. Conference info at http://bit.ly/whocanwetrust

The mini-conference will be held at St Andrews on the Terrace church and conference centre. It follows on from one held last year titled democracy, ethics and the public good when Sandra Grey, Bronwyn Hayward and Jane Kelsey were amongst the speakers. 2014 Conference report

This years conference has come directly out of the recommendations of last years which were that the lack of reliable information and problems with information flows to and from the media were amongst the most important challenges to NZ’s democracy. Like last year the focus is as much on participation as listening.

If you’d like to support this but can’t come you can donate to help us cover the costs of videoing, facilitation and some of the speakers travel costs.

Sorry to miss this. Maybe it's time to just advertise then close the door when too many people turn up?

  • Hard News: A better thing to believe in,

On a personal level, my feeling for the game is undoubtedly driven by the fact that I played it through my childhood. That my strongest bonds with my late father lie in the way he was there every Saturday, watching me play, driving me and the other kids to and from the ground, offering praise in the cautious way that men of his generation did, as if there was only a finite supply.

    Beautiful true.
