  • Hard News: One man’s Meat Puppets is…, in reply to JacksonP,

ELO and Olivia Neutron Bomb. It was a match made in... Xanadu..

Xanadu is one of those "great soundtracks, shame about the movie" deals. (Though it's fun trying to guess how much cocaine had been inhaled around the shooting of any given scene.) And, yes, I have them both tucked away in an undisclosed location.

It still hurts my brain trying to figure out of Gene Kelly headlined the greatest movie musical every made (that's Singing in the Rain,) and ended up here...

Now, I've got to get back to explaining why you should make your tweenies watch Battle Royale and avoid The Hunger Games like a whore with the pox.

  • Hard News: Reputation and remuneration, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

Aline Sandilands arguing that media high-flyers are not paid enough and thus have to prostitute themselves to corporates or advertisers….phtt!

To be honest, I found Aline Sandilands’ ethical compass a little suspect considering (IIRC) on her watch there were one or two questions around TVNZ “personalities” appearing in women’s magazines… and getting paid. Is it a good look for employees of a public broadcaster being beneficiaries of chequebook PR?

  • Hard News: One man’s Meat Puppets is…, in reply to Russell Brown,

Ahem. She’s saying it wasn’t necessarily arse sex, but I think there can be no possible debate what that song is about.

We’re talking about disco – if that’s not a musical genre all about smothering the most innocuous lyric in sexual innuendo (the gayer the better) what the hell is? Hey, Donna Summer made a career out of faking orgasms to Moroder at his most Euro-trashy.

And YMMV, but I think Heaven will be much more agreeable if Sylvester is swishing around the place... (WARNING: Clip contains high levels of fabulousness that may freak out some viewers.)

  • Hard News: The Huawei Question, in reply to Lew Stoddart,

I would welcome an appropriately diplomatic statement from the minister or the PM to that effect.

You mean something upon these lines --

"New Zealand is a sovereign nation whose government receives - and assesses - advice from many sources, foreign and domestic on a daily basis. While we value our long-standing good relations with allies like Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom we will make our own decisions about our economic and infrastructural security."

Nor in my estimation is there anything guilty about liking 1975-77 Mac. 'TUSK!'

That's great paranoid stalker pop -- it's a real thing people (Better Be Home Soon, Every Breath You Take). But I've got to admit I love to spicks and specks... 'Go Your Own Way'.

Passive-aggressive "why you wanna treat me so bad when I luurve you?" dude-ness has never sounded so good.

This – the perfect storm of mind-bending awfulness. So many people who should have known better blurping through a banal song grossly over-produced, and it just refused to go away…

  • Up Front: Hitting That, in reply to Emma Hart,

“Passing” is another thing I’m oddly reluctant to talk about. Because just being able to pass is a form of privilege, right?

Yes it is, but so is being the self-appointed bouncer deciding who is is allowed into the fabulous GLBT club. Having spent way too much of my life being a very bad gay indeed (c.f. “you’re a BAD FEMINIST”, and the “Hori-er Than Thou” axis of irritation), it’s depressing being back at high school with the same old “cool kids” bullshit in a different box.

Really, could someone please send me the GOOD GAY 2.0 operating manual because I'm almost forty and all I've got is this stupid fucking toaster oven.

  • Hard News: The Huawei Question, in reply to nzlemming,

ETA By which I mean a US/Aus opinion is actually no reason to take anything seriously.

No, we're talking about agencies whose case for something as non-trivial as going to war a decade back was, shall we say, not entirely sound. Think that bears repeating. A lot.

  • Hard News: The Huawei Question, in reply to 3410,

Whereas the PM shouldn’t have to suffer evidence-free allegations, for some reason.
    ;)

Yeah, 3410, please find another subject to troll me on -- because I suspect I've seen Peters' malice and dishonesty at much closer quarters than you.

C,mon Craighy . You know that National would running the same lines on the ‘yellow peril’ if they were in opposition right now . Ask me how I know that.

When your point shows up, drop me a line.

  • Hard News: The Huawei Question, in reply to Kumara Republic,

anyone spot the inconsistency between the usual suspects happily playing the ‘Iwi/Kiwi’ card, and their seemingly John Frum-ish approach to Chinese (and Wall Street) money?

You know, Red, I could say right back at ya to so-called "progressives" who don't have too many qualms about singing from the same hymn book as Winston First. It's a good rule of thumb to assume Peters is lying as soon as his lips start to move, but I expect marginally better from the Greens. (At the moment, I've put any expectations of Labour on hiatus. They'll get their shit together soon enough.)
