    Cool & Confident Butcherbird

I used to enjoy John Dengate, who'd answer Sydney listeners' questions about backyard wildlife on ABC radio. When a caller asked why the butcherbird that had taken to showing up at his backyard bird feeding station didn't make a meal of the other birds - because butcherbirds occasionally do that - he was told to "just keep feeding him."

A standard feature of Dengate's radio sessions would be the caller who'd been blessed with a "marsupial" visitor, only to have their hopes dashed with "It's a rat."
"But they sit up on their hind legs!"
    "It's a rat."
    "They climb trees . . ."
    "It's a rat."
"They have the cutest little faces . . ."
    "DEFINITELY a rat."

Aussie birds are pretty but they tend to have very harsh and sometimes disturbing calls (like whips and whistles and shrieks) - not much of that gorgeous birdsong that fills the bush back home - something I still miss.

Oz birdsong - "Like a chipmunk throwing up" as a Canadian of my acquaintance once put it. It's hard to beat any of the butcherbirds for gorgeous morning birdsong, though from my experience they only stay resident for a week or two before moving on.

Needed a close Captain Cook to ID the driver.
    Going nowhere today.

  • Hard News: The Editorial Image, in reply to Bruce Ward,

That cartoon did appear in the Nelson Mail where the editorial page normally has a cartoon titled Moreu's View.

Thanks for that Bruce, nice to know he's around.

I suspect it is Mike Moreu

Has to be, but without the conclusive signature I wondered if he had a new ID. Any idea where his editorial stuff appears now? I believe that the Nelson Mail used to be his home base. He was certainly appreciated while he was around. A pity that the Press has reverted to its old assumption that treating its readership like adults when it comes to editorial cartoons is a kind of fluffy option.

    and to this

Well spotted sir. That's what provoked me to attempt to ID the apparent original author, who's predated Emerson's effort by almost a week. The self-effacing signature doesn't help.

Please can anyone ID this cartoonist? Their stuff regularly appears uncredited on Bryce Edwards' Liberation blog. Bears a passing similarity to Mike Moreu who abruptly vanished a while back.

Perhaps you could weigh in on the other great Press story of Gerry Brownlee's 'straightened times' ...

Ah what the hell. Seriously, I reckon the main reason Brownlee comes out with this stuff is because it pisses off people he doesn't like.

    By the Kool-Aid table, right?

According to the ploddingly goofy Tahu Potiki, Tamaki's a victim of the chardonnay set's contempt for Kool-Aid, with extra demerits for being indigenous.

Re. the Miniplenty mug - will you be doing a visual size comparison with the "regular cup", or would that be giving the game away?
