    particularly the beneficiary bashing

Yup. That and a return to economic nationalism have been pretty big turn offs for me.

I'm interested to see how this new housing policy will turn out though - at first glance it seems to be a step back in the right [ahem] ...correct direction. We shall see.

    I hate what he said.

Fair enough. But I'm observing from 11,000-odd km away, so I'm not getting a lot of the wider context, which may partially explain why I read Hipkins' comments differently. My take was that he was saying "let's just get this leadership issue sorted and out of the way now". Because like others, I see this as distracting in quite a destructive way. Labour should be getting on with being the Opposition and holding the government accountable and putting its message out there, instead there's constant speculation about who wants to be leader. Not helpful.

Members of the Party? Shearer wants caucus support to take this to the membership?

Dunno. TVNZ wrote that, not me. I would've assumed he was going to caucus to get caucus' support.

  • Hard News: Calling the race before it's over, in reply to Russell Brown,

As widely predicted yesterday afternoon, Shearer seems to be going for an early caucus vote to confirm his position.

And now TVNZ has updated with this:

Labour leader David Shearer has summoned an urgent caucus meeting for tomorrow to seek endorsement from members of the party.

The move follows an announcement this morning that MP David Cunliffe is set to be demoted for effectively mounting a leadership challenge against Shearer after refusing to guarantee he would back the leader next February.

Tomorrow's meeting will be held in Wellington at 4pm. Several Labour MPs are calling for Cunliffe to put up or shut up, including the party's chief whip, Chris Hipkins.

I like what Chris Hipkins said.

    Enjoy these:

The website doesn't work well on my connection. Not blocked, just a bit too slow to fully come through. But those two pictures you posted are cool. Cheers.

Ah, brilliant, thanks. After yesterday’s lunch with my ex-USMC colleague, that was precisely what was needed to get me back on an even keel.

    Show Week in Christchurch.

Love that. The side of the truck (?) saying "Expect to see the bigger picture" but the people focussed on something rather small. It seems to sum up a fair bit of life.

  • Hard News: Party on, dudes, in reply to BenWilson,

Is it even a meaningful thing to count, in original?

A character count would be easy, obviously. A word count, less so, and would involve a bit of discussion, but certainly neither meaningless nor impossible. It's not so much a characters:ideas issue as a 'discrete units of meaning' issue, and that's not entirely sorted out in English either - see all those hyphens and compounds, for example.

But 800,000 in translation suggests I've got a lot of work ahead to finish the book. More focussed on Mo Yan at the moment, though. He's much easier to read.

but less than The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

How many words does 3 Kingdoms have? And translation or original? I've managed the first chapter in a student's edition of the original (nice little footnotes explaining odd or rare characters), but damn, that was hard work. Frustrating, cos I actually quite liked the story when I could get my mind around the old fashioned grammar.

Count me among the expats for whom PAS fulfills a certain lifeline function. In my case it restores my faith in the good, creative, intelligent, inclusive NZ that doesn't often make it in the news.

    Thanks, Russell and everybody.
