  • Hard News: The CRL and the nature of change, in reply to Swan,

The timing of the disruption is the issue. Nobody wants to build their new office block or hotel and then have the street outside become a building site for over a year. However it is no coincidence that many of the upcoming projects are around the CRL route. The new Aotea station is predicted to overtake Britomart as the most busy in the region.

Yes, the disruption would be to other building projects on Albert St, not the Downtown site.

can't be safely refrozen a second time for later use

wonder if the beancounters thought of that cost for recipients rather than the DHB?

Much like Auckland DHB, which provides tertiary services to the whole country but only gets funding based on the population of its board area.

Pretty sure they also get funding after the fact from the person's local DHB. Still expensive to maintain clinical quality and suchlike for the only national service for many conditions. We are a small country.

but it's reimbursed at the same per-capita rate as elsewhere

You miss the weighting for ethnic diversity, and it seems the adjustment for rurality and distance is not enough to make up for that.

  • Access: Right to die?,

Morgan Foundation GM Geoff Simmons shows what can happen to otherwise smart people's arguments on topics like this:

The opponents of assisted dying have offered several arguments to back up their case, but none of them are logical and evidence-based.

All that remains is their belief in the sanctity of life, or an arrogant belief that experiencing a natural death is good for the patient and their family. These are spiritual beliefs held by a few people, and are not good reasons to rob people like Lecretia Seales of the right to choose how they die.

When research about the impact on disabled people is funded (because we're worth it), he might have some 'evidence' to compare.

  • Hard News: The CRL and the nature of change, in reply to John Farrell,

The main issue as Russell mentioned is that big infrastructure must meet *future* rather than current needs. Statistics NZ predicts two-thirds of all NZ's population growth in coming decades will be in Auckland, mostly from local breeding rather than migration. We have been silly enough to elect a string of councils and governments who have penny-pinched and delayed building.

We are also only playing catch-up nationally on decades of underinvestment where Aucklanders also paid for roading in other regions - which is fine. We all live in the same country, and visit other places. I do feel sorry for Dunedin and the mainland coping with a cultural transition over many decades away from being the main focus in NZ. But this whole nation needs Auckland to pull our weight now.
