"if something better was available, it would have already been put on the market"

bit much faith in the ol' market there methinks... hydrogen cars, anyone? why bother improving the product if it's already shifting big units...

  • Hard News: The Big Stereo Bundle,

Russell what's the sample rate we're talking about here? always get edgy when I hear the word MP3 -- and how come Amplifier don't let you listen to the whole thing before you buy it? song samples don't cut it, never have.

also, what rate do you buy your songs on iTunes encoded at? I'm interested in finding a CD-equivalent setting. thanks.

  • Hard News: A lot of money and a bit rich,

Mex is a legend Mr Brown, just get over it.

I have no opinion on Hamish McKay having not really ever seen any rugby on TV3.

big chin though, I'm sure he can cop this vitriole...

FYI it's impossible to watch live sport TV with radio commentary unless you've got a delay on one of the media: radio's faster than live TV pics... of course, a simple guitar delay or tape loop would suffice on the radio end of things... simple if you're a guitar geek or sound engineer, that is. hard for the rest of us... someone should think about this and adjust the speed of the radio commentary Radio Sport et al, it's hardly rocket science... would be great for any Kiwis test in the UK, now THOSE guys truly scrape the barrel of commentary, yuk.

  • Radiation: Sensational,

yeah that's what Juliet McVeigh said, check Sideswipe in the Herald for more. . . they did fix it for the late news, was probably too late feeding it from Queenstown via Christchurch to Auckland to redo for 6pm. I blame Chch - source of all things evil.

  • Random Play: A missive from an ancient mariner,

not to be TOO pedantic hopefully but referring to sports teams of any sort (and especially the All Blacks) as "we" or "us" is, well, wrong...

to state the obvious, I'm not an All Black nor am I a Team NZ sailor and neither are you (probably!) - and empathising so closely with a sports team's results can get very ugly. I hated it on Saturday when the Wallabies kept NZ scoreless and then came back to win - but heck, it's only a game... quite different to when my own football teams lose (I play in four different ones), I take that very hard. but then, I'm actually involved.

with the NZ rugby team this sort of casual semantic link between them and ourselves ended very ignominiously in 1999, with morons who over-identified with the team involved embarrassing the whole country with their rabid over-reaction to the defeat to the French - and it's the same with Team NZ, who are patently NOT representing New Zealand.

sure it's just a one-syllable distinction between "us" and "we" and "them" but I think it's an important one to remember when discussing sport. and a very telling one at times....

  • Speaker: Students vs Dunedin,

hi Paul, I know it was an offhand comment - but meet another (ex-)Dunedinite who's massively in favour of your new stadium!

not to labour the point - and this is little to do with this thread - but I reckon kicking Carisbrook and getting a stadium with a ROOF is a no-brainer for Dunners.

I lived in Dunedin for nine or so years, studied and worked there, and let's face it, the weather's shite. only Wellington (and the West Coast) can rival it for crapness. a roof's essential.

screw the parking! Dunners is small, you can walk.
