  • Speaker: You ain't from round here, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Council CEO Marryatt's talent for chicken hypnosis appears to work best on the demonstrably bone stupid. While Wells and Parker retained enough higher brain function to recognise the inevitable, Button and the hapless Councillor Keown bear out Nietzsche's words: "The streak of chalk bewitcheth the hen; the stroke he struck bewitched his weak reason. Madness AFTER the deed, I call this."

Which can explain why Cunliffe thinks Dyson would be good for earthquake recovery . Everyone down there is vulnerable whether they know it or not. I think she would do well too.

Of course she's currently in that role, along with Clayton Cosgrove, since Lianne Dalziel's departure forced a reshuffle. So far she's been rather quieter than I'd hoped, with Cosgrove scoring a real hit with his use of his MP's privilege to force the EQC to hand over the information that they'd previously tried to exorbitantly charge WECAN for. Nevertheless Dyson has regularly turned up to most protest events, and she spoke well at the anti-GCSB event in the Square.

That Dalziel was effectively nobbled as earthquake recovery spokesperson for most of Shearer's time as leader is an indication of how cynical Party infighting can be. Cosgrove was one of the more engaged local MPs on earthquake issues right through 2011, yet despite being a Shearer supporter he was sin-binned for protesting Cunliffe's banishment to a minor role.

Look at the Standard and the Daily Blog and the pretty much continuous campaign of vilification against MPs who don’t back Cunliffe. Hilary Stace got screamed at there for suggesting Ruth Dyson was a pretty decent Minister. It’s really not where I want my party to go.

As it happens, Ruth Dyson's electorate committee chairman writes a regular column on Chch issues for The Daily Blog.

Anytime someone else had seriously stuffed up, Trevor would suddenly say or do something outrageous to divert the fickle news cycle.

I guess whatever Mallard was creating a diversion from back here has been lost in the mists of time. Personally I'd feel a whole lot better about Trev if there'd been even a peep out of him on Chch earthquake mismanagement (there hasn't). No problem poking his oar into Christchurch issues when there was a chance to race Rodney Hide to the bottom.

Hebe, I'd be happy to engage once you've dropped the personal stuff. Feelings are running high at the moment over the Marryatt issue. Attempting to re-write the history of Moore's involvement with Marryatt's appointment comes across as patronising and provocative.

Garry is an old family friend...

Good for you. For my part, I emailed Garry Moore over a certain issue back when he was Mayor, and received a prompt and courteous reply. That's certainly more than could ever be expected from the present incumbent. I only wish that Moore had been rather more constructively critical of the Parker-led Council in the years since the earthquakes began. All we've heard is a rather bad-tempered swipe at Parker's "show pony" tendencies, and nothing at all about the disastrous CEO's antics. While Moore could have publicly distanced himself from his early endorsement of Marryatt, his later acceptance of an unadvertied position as a paid consultant to Council appears to have unfortunately compromised his ability to speak out.

These are the relationships that are formed and all done openly.

Openly in the sense that, like an iceberg, all that’s in plain view is the top 10%. Nepotism is actively abetted where it suits the local media, and hard questions are rarely asked until someone has fallen utterly out of favour.

For example, only days after the September 2010 earthquake the Press was beating up a story on the Mayoress’s entitlement to scoff Council-meeting muffins, while CEO Marryatt was quoted on the same page openly referring to the by then highly dodgy Dave Henderson as “Dave”.
