  • Hard News: Not good enough, Eden Park, in reply to Russell Brown,

But in this case, they give the razz to someone who has actually been subjected to bullying and harassment? What the hell is wrong with them?

A question I hope Auckland Rugby and the NZRFU are asking as well, considering they're making some effort to... well, give live rugby an image make-over with slightly less alcohol-marinaded testosterone in the mix. And I'm sure we can all applaud the sight of All Blacks and Black Ferns as ambassadors for the Applaud Initiative to get the sporting equivalent of stage mothers to tone it down a bit. Well, a lot.

  • Hard News: Not good enough, Eden Park, in reply to Bart Janssen,

The management of Eden Park can specify the behaviours that are acceptable in the stadium.

Of course they do. I imagine if I showed up with my dick hanging out of my trousers, a fully-loaded bong in one hand and a flagon of paint-stripper home-brew in the other, I'd be *cough* offered a ride home with the nice Police officers. And rightly so. :)

  • Hard News: Not good enough, Eden Park, in reply to Tom Semmens,

Since that is the case, I am not sure why people are getting their knickers in such a twist about what to do about the two guys in question. Sometime, you just gotta put up with it.

I think this is worth repeating, Tom, but football clubs in the UK (you know, those havens of amok political correctness) are deciding nobody - not players, not spectators, not the folks whose taxes and rates are subsidising their corporate welfare - just has to suck it up and tolerate racist or homophobic sledging.

Apart from the question of sheer common decency, the Eden Park Trust need to remember they're running a business and GLBTI and women's money is legal tender too.

  • Hard News: Not good enough, Eden Park, in reply to Danielle,

The key difference being that no one is abusively yelling "look at that guy, what a fucking heterosexual!" about them at the rugby.

Well, the Aussies are hosting the Bingham Cup next year, so don't speak too soon. (I jest, I'm sure our homolicious cousins over the water will be keeping it clean and fabulous.) :)

  • Hard News: Not good enough, Eden Park, in reply to Scott Chris,

The public events I attend have a prevailing culture compatible with my levels of passive tolerance.

Yeah, but nah... I'm one of these cranks who actually believes that when someone is acting obnoxiously it's their responsibility to change their ways or accept the kind of consequences that exist in any society with pretensions to civilization.

FFS, it's something football clubs in the United Kingdom and Europe are (slowly but surely) getting their heads around when it comes to racist and anti-semitic sledging in the stands. And a good part of that is governments willing to remind clubs they're not only businesses but, one way or another, beneficiaries of enormous public subsidies and not magically exempt from civil laws.

    Worth thinking about, yes?

  • Hard News: Not good enough, Eden Park, in reply to Matthew Poole,

It would be nice if NZRFU came out against the response, but I really cannot see that happening. "PC Police", etc.

Would it be appropriate to note the irony of the (entirely worthy) Applaud campaign. If dick-baggery isn't acceptable on the sidelines of kids' matches, it shouldn't be tolerated at international fixtures, right?

  • Hard News: Not good enough, Eden Park, in reply to Scott Chris,

In my experience a typical rugby crowd is always going to have a few assholes in it. If you're of a sensitive disposition, I suggest you don't go.

Yeah, Chris, and it's funny how it always seems to be women, GLBT people, Jews, Muslims and people of colour who are expected to take their "sensitive dispositions" elsewhere, isn't it?

I'd also note something Russell forgot to mention in his post. The Eden Park Trust is the beneficiary of a $40 million loan guaranteed by Auckland ratepayers - including the GLBTI ones. Can't say this "homo" is terribly keen to see this extended any further until Eden Park cleans its act up.

  • Hard News: The United States of Surveillance?,

In part, this may be down to Greenwald himself. His dreadful invocation of a rape metaphor to respond to his critics over the weekend fell well short of the conduct we might expect of a public-interest journalist.

Yeah, but it wish it was at all surprising from someone who went rancid at people suggesting he might hold fire on Zero Dark Thirty (and some rather acidic personal attacks on the director and writer) until, you know... he'd actually seem the (IMO nuts-deeply problematic) film.

  • Legal Beagle: D-Day for Dunne (updated), in reply to Rob Stowell,

Not so private when Winston gets to read them.

I guess it's totally beyond the realms of possibility that Winston's feeding a load of bullshit to inexplicably credulous hacks?

  • Legal Beagle: D-Day for Dunne (updated), in reply to Andrew Geddis,

Do we care about whether it is "advice" or "legal advice" or "procedural advice" or "interpretation advice" or "pink-with-purple patches advice"? What possible difference does the terminological point make?

Well, Andrew, you might want to put that question to David Parker because the 'terminological point' seemed rather important while he was accusing the Speaker of pulling his ruling out of his arse and (in passing) not being entirely honest about it.
