It’s interesting reading views about the time written by the children of Rogernomics, and what is accepted as fact.
Glad to have had the opportunity to read Harvey McQueen's The Ninth Floor (thank you Ian Dalziel), a far from self-serving account by an insider of the tensions within the fracturing Lange administration. Yesterday's apparent ephemera becomes today's solid history.

When I think of my parents, on a relatively low income, putting all their spare change into these little white plastic Labour ‘78 and then Labour ’81 Election campaign ’piggy-bank’ boxes, with the aim of doing their little bit for the election of a social democratic government (and thousands around the Country doing the same thing despite barely being able to afford it)…. the sheer arrogance and zealotry of Douglas, Prebble, (the particularly waspish) Bassett and their fellow-travellers defies belief !
I remember the rueful late 80s reminiscences of an elderly guy from the Princes Street branch of the Labour Party, about the young Richard Prebble. Despite being a tad disconcerted by Prebble’s differently abled haircut and ghastly jumpers, the old party stalwarts agreed that he was the best thing that had happened to them in some time.

I can only wonder if Mccully’s views on feminist issues played a role, but even that seems hard to credit.
McCully certainly has a track record of playing to the misogynist constituency. Back at the end of the 80s he issued a press release mocking a grant to women's rugby, couched in such a way as to suggest that the recipients were a bunch of barking lesbian separatists because, well, they played rugby.

I’ll qualify that: last thing I read in the Press about him said Kyle Chapman was no longer in Christchurch. I shouldn’t have taken that as a fact.
It's a nice thought anyway :) It was a few years ago now, but back when Outrageous Fortune was all the go I definitely recall the Press attempting to do a clumsy human interest angle on whatever was left of the Harris Brothers.

And you a disability advocate and all. Shame on you. Because once you're past the Press's deliberate beating up of the significance of that handful of unfortunates, you'll find that Chchch's notorious skinheads are pretty much all sickness benficiaries, most with psychiatric issues. A couple of weeks on the till at an all-night BP, watching the poor sods emote over the ATM when their benefits fail to come through, might provide a balance to the kind of media BS you've happily linked to.
