  • Hard News: Maxim-ising the vote,

My favouite bit from the article in The Australian:

To start, the liberal press and the Labour Party immediately condemned him as a racist - this despite the fact his second wife of 15 years was Chinese.

Thats fantastic 'logic' there... roughly the same as concluding that all men who hate women but have wives are not misogynists?

Perhaps even better is this quote about Orewa speech on the Treaty and all other prononcements on race:

It was this sort of brave, speak-truth-to-power fearlessness - a quality only likely from a non-politician's politician who was past retirement age and never really schooled in the dangers of offending vested interests

However what Allan leaves out is that it seems from documentary evidence in Hager's book Brash and his team didn't actually believe in what they were saying.

Glad to see James Allan, who is certainly a Tiriti o Waitangi revisionist of the worst kind, has found his spiritual home in Australia, possibly the most vile place in the Western world in terms of how the treat indigenous populations. I have heard stories from the people over there that would make your toes curl.

  • Hard News: Maxim-ising the vote,

Sagenz, we should have a measure of care for the people living around Eden Park because, they're like y'know, humans and all... besides they form a powerful lobby that can and do restrict the activities that are allowed to occur at Eden Park, i.e. only 25 night of use per year.

As for central Government consulting.. eh? I completely missed that phase of the stadium process, please, show me the evidence and I will be happy to admit I am wrong. There is no denying people wanted to give Clark and Mallard a slap in the face, but I think many ordinary people just didnt want the waterfront for good reasons.

Don, is right, the ARC decision doesn't reflect the thoughts of the Auckland population in a sense, but then what do they know that we don't, vis a vis disruption to port business (meaning a drop in funds for infrastructure, so a double cost for Auckanders), the actually buildability of the stadium, and the cost. I bet a huge amount of those things got seriously fudged in the rush to build what seems to me to be a vanity project.

The trouble is the choice that was pushed on the ACC and ARC was so narrow, and when you weigh up all the ramifications of each, it was always going to be a lose-lose situation for the people of Auckland.

What no one seems to be really be picking up on, is its all for a stupid sports tournament. Let the people who will actually benefit from RWC pay for it, and send millions of taxpayers cash to things that matter. Like fraudulent election campaigns with shadowy religious groups whose member wear cute headdresses.

While some refer to the Orewa speech as the most divisive thing to happen to NZ race relations in some time, I'd suggest that that would actually be the Foreshore and Seabed Act.

I would tend to agree with that analysis, but only because of the power factor. That is, Brash would have been a far more racially divise force if he had the power to be so, he just didn't get the chance, (I wonder if he ever really believed Orewa I??). But in saying that I must admit I find Clark much more morally repugnant for her behaviour over the foreshore and seabed.

I think you will most Maori, myself included, fail to see any substantial difference between Labour and National in terms of the way they will cynically exploit us if it suits their purposes. We have a joke that you tell what major party is in power by whether the knife is in your front (National) or your back (Labour).

I am just patiently wating for demographics to allow Maori to take back responsibility for their lives, land and whanau.

  • Hard News: Maxim-ising the vote,

Nick, nice letter, but would be better if it actually substantiated its criticisms with... y'know, concrete examples or evidence. Not saying Hager isn't trouble, just that the letter doesn't go anywhere in proving it.

Speaking of letters, has anyone read Hone Harawira's open letter of farewell to Dr Brash?

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10412731

I like Harawira, its good to see people I have marched with in parliament, but his tone was a bit off-colour. I can see what motivated him, but its not a good look to be so ignoble in victory.

  • Hard News: Maxim-ising the vote,

Don, clearly there wasn't one supporter of the waterfront option amongst the ARC, otherwise they would have voted for it. True some may have had vague support for the idea only to be pressured into a no vote, but then that shows the conviction wasnae that strong in the first place.

As for not representing Auckland, well the majority of people who publicly expressed their opinions whether through submissions to the ACC, ARC or Herald were firmly opposed to the waterfront option. And no I am not saying this is a particularly scientific measure, but it does show a strong indication.

It seems to me that Auckland, and its eledted representatives were put in a difficult position by the meglomaniacs in central government: Pick the waterfront and be bold visionaries... and earn the ire of all taxpayers when the budget explodes (which is to say nothing to the damage to shipping industry - did we really think hastily mucking about a multi-billion dollar industry was a good idea?)

Or go with the Eden Park option and be boring nimbies, unrateful of the public being show generously given to us for a flash new toy. Was really a claytons choice we got, and the rush to build on the waterfront without consultation was rather unseemly.

The irony is that Mallard and co saw no problem with steamrolling a massive project, that clearly hadn't been costed properly, onto us, but if want to build a garden shed I have to hire a lawyer and plan it a year in advance. (and now of course, we learn Eden Park has hidden costs we are only just learning about, to go with its already glaring problems.)

Hooray for democracy, it really allows the cream to float don't it.

Well, he did vote against the Foreshore and Seabed Act ... is that a start?

What exactly do you mean by that Graeme?

  • OnPoint: Bar brawls aren't my thing,

Apologies, replace 'muzzle' in my post above with 'firm request she not lie and stoke racial antipathy'. God forbid anyone should suggest DC should lose her job for... well for not doing her job, wilful negligence about sums it up reckon.

Writing to the CEO trying to get someone sacked isn't a great look.

Dumb question I know, but why is this so? Boy o boy, anti-PC matyrdom, thats my favouritist flavour of desperation.

  • OnPoint: Bar brawls aren't my thing,

Actually sorry, this is the most galling thing:

Another: Statistics NZ projections put the Asian population at 860,000 in 20 years, just 10,000 fewer than Maori. Is this what the tangata whenua envisage?

I really hate it when priveleged Pakeha who demonstrate no community ties with Maori (of the Flaxroots kind - giving Parekura Horomia stick over a galss of Chardy and canapes at Parliament doesn't count) try to speak for us. Personally I find that I have more in common culturally with Asians, especially SE Asians, than Pakeha, especially those of DC stripe. Bring on the yellow peril and the desi diaspora, anything will be an improvement on the English.

Talk about wedge politics... and this is just part of a long history of mass media being used to create hostiliy between Maori and Asians, particularly Chinese. Prof Margaret Mutu and Dr Manying Ip or University of Auckland are doing a fascinating research project on this, was anyone here at the seminar they delivered about a month aga at Waipapa Marae?

Incidentally Keith and Tze, Prof Mutu was very interested and delighted in your debate about Treaty politics using Star Trek as a metaphor. Nice.

I think everyone here is the missed the point slightly... no doubt Deborah Coddington is either a few tins short of a 6 pack or just plain nasty, BUT

As some have noted, attacking here with things like logic and um, whats that thing called... o yeah reality, is clearly a waste of time.

What galls me is not that she thinks (I use that term loosely here) this way, or promotes such horrendous views to the public. What makes me angry is that she is allowed to have a soap box to stand on at all. WTF is the NZ Herald doing even giving her column inches, and why are people not attacking them for providing an arena for such grossly ill-informed and vile garbage?

I say give up on DC and start on the NZ Herald, will be a much more productive use of energy. Aim for the top of the pile I say:
The CEO of APN (the Heralds parent company dontcha know) is Ken Steinke, getting his email address was just about impossible, but his PA (she is a lovely women so be nice!!) is Nicky Jones, I am sure she will pass on any polite and reasonable requests to muzzle DC to the big boss: nicky.jones@apn.co.nz
