  • Hard News: The Casino,

Getting into the buzz entails recognising that some people are going to be hurt by what they're doing.

Now I'm not a casino fan, the place bores me rigid but isn't this exactly the same as going into a bar and having a drink? At some point you can't be responsible for all of society's ills, if you can handle your drink/play a game of cards without ruining your life or those of others then good luck to you.

  • Field Theory: Cricketucation,

If it's essentially invisible to children in over 50% of households, of course the number of players is going to decline.

Because it's a Well Known Fact that we can't do anything that's not shown on TV.

I call bullshit, I grew up in a non-sport-watching household and still managed to know how to play cricket/rugby/soccer before the end of intermediate school. If you want people to play sport, then go play sport!

  • Hard News: Effectively Friday,

I was thinking "who the hell is Christian Bale?", so I looked him up, and now I realise he's that bloke who wasted what felt like 18 hours of my life in the Batman movie. Meh.

But that sucks about Lux Interior. I was just at a 5th birthday party on the weekend where the Dad swapped the kiddie CD's for some Cramps and everything was improved greatly. RIP.

  • OnPoint: Don’t let them eat cake,

A far-north-NSW term for hoon that I quite liked was "cog". It's short and sharp and sounds cool. Unfortunately I've never heard it used outside Lismore. Not sure if it's from QLD though.

  • OnPoint: Joggers in Saigon,

Hmm, I've been to Phnom Penh and other bits of Cambodia, various corners of Thailand and Laos, but the only place I've ever been offered child prostitution was a fairly upmarket part of Kuala Lumpur, right across the street from my hotel. Go figure!

  • Hard News: Trading Trade Me?,

Watching Trade Me go nuts while your book becomes a paper weight's gotta hurt.

I'd like to see a TradeMe prop my door open or keep my monitor at the right height.

What, there's phone numbers inside that thing?

  • Field Theory: Hey, no gang signs,

my fall-back position would be Only Shallow by My Bloody Valentine.

I dunno how that would sound over the PA but definitely in the running for best bloody song ever.

  • Hard News: A Weird Day in the Hood,

Having fired a few rounds from a police-esque Glock 9mm... I have absolutely no surprise that the police failed to hit the suspect standing on an erratically moving flatbed truck.

They were armed offender squad officers firing M4 assault rifles, not handguns, according to the Herald. From the pictures, it appears they fired from the side of the motorway, through the truck and hit the van driver on the other side. I find this concerning, my wife & kids were in that traffic.

  • Random Play: BDO: Field of Dreams (and Nightmares),

Did anyone see The Dropkick Murphys?

We saw the first half or so of their set. They were fun and got a good crowd, although the sound where I was standing (directly in front about 20m back) was very tinny and a bit hard on the ears (no surprise given the range of instruments on hand I guess).

After a few songs we realised that they only really have one or two actual "songs" and that the set consists of small variations on those. They're fun though and might be a really great night out at a smaller venue with copious alcohol closer to hand.

I thought the T-shirts were cool though so I grabbed one of those!

    Did anyone see Weta play?

Yep we caught the end of their set. They were having a good time and there were plenty of people dancing. The singer's voice was shot by then but otherwise they sounded good.
