  • Access: Some aspects of New Zealand’s…, in reply to Hilary Stace,

Sweden has a shameful eugenics past that was only revealed in the 1990s. But most countries do.

    Having a chuckle here, Hilary.

Peter and I spend most of our time tiki touring and meeting up with allsorts on the road.

Fellow travellers/campers from all over the world.

At the moment we are on the East Coast, NI.

We have almost invariably found that it is the overseas travellers from Sweden, Germany, France etc who are more accepting of someone beetling around the camp in a wheelchair.

Most of our fellow Kiwi campers simply blank Peter out, and it is the foreigners who will engage with him.

    Go figure.

  • Access: Some aspects of New Zealand’s…,

We have in New Zealand created two classes of people with disabilities.

Those with serious, permanent impairments under ACC enjoy rights, entitlements and supports that those with exactly the same disability under MOH can only dream of.

Somehow, we, as a nation think this is OK.

    It isn’t.

    This needs to change.

This disparity in rights and entitlements merely reinforces the old idea that those born able and disabled through accident, are more worthy than those born disabled or who become disabled as a result of some ‘weakness’ or ‘poor breeding.’

Those on ACC really do believe they deserve the superior treatment they are entitled to.

In our experience, (in the spinal injured field) the disparities between ACC and MOH are HUGE….yet those on ACC simply choose to ignore them.

They also tend to treat those who were injured before ACC came in with a certain disdain….bordering on disrespect.

too many disability leaders – a real reluctance to stand up to power.

    because.....

    http://www.victoria.ac.nz/sacs/pdf-files/Fears-constraints-and-contracts-Grey-and-Sedgwick-2014.pdf

Imagine, if, in an alternate universe, one quarter of the one quarter of the population of Aotearoa who identify as disabled paid $10 per year to support an organisation who would truly represent the interests of ALL people with disabilities.

Oh! What advocacy we would have!

    Key genially shares all

Damn right...that's what makes him this....

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/australiaandthepacific/newzealand/11156005/John-Key-the-poor-boy-who-saved-New-Zealands-economy.html

See...we don't know how lucky we are mate...

My claim to fame? I have raised three children to adulthood who don't routinely watch television. Just like the Old People, they find it trite and demeaning. They don't listen to talkback radio, or indulge in the twittersphere. The one Facebooker is over it. They scan the news sites and listen (discriminantly) to Natrad.

    And we talk, and talk,

The best we all can do is effect change...or at least insist on insight...within the reach of our own arm.

Or hop into our housebus and opt out for a bit....

  • Hard News: What to make of the spray, in reply to Grant Philpott,

The book warns that chloramphenicol should never be used prophylactically because of the dangers, yet decades later doctors in New Zealand are still using it dangerously.

Ha! My partner Peter (who developed leukamia from fungicide spray) mentioned his sore dry eyes to his GP. GP prescribed drops. Drops caused instant and violent reaction to the extent that I had to repeatedly flush out his eyes. Looked up drops...chloramphenical...I was horrified that it was prescribed to someone who already had dodgey bloods. Dear oh dear.

Grant, when we were researching our issues with carbendazim, we stumbled accross your case and thought...poor bugger...he's set himself a task and a half.

Respect to you for taking them on. Some of us more than understand just what a huge undertaking it is to bring these truths to the table.

To be told, repeatedly, that there is no data/research confirming that a substance is harmful by those with a vested intrest in hiding the truth...well...it can make one feel very much on your own.

The lies, deceit and manipulation that goes on....once one uncovers it....makes your head spin.

But it is all about the dollar.

Your ongoing health issues...I hope you get something sorted out.

For what its worth...my partner was having chemo a few months after this guy, who happened to have the same rare form of leukaemia as Peter as well as swine flu.

Peter has been taking 2000mg Vitamin C since 2010. Despite being in a high risk group for infections (being a tetraplegic) he has been well since recovering from the chemo.

Again, the medical professionals dismiss this as being effective.

Sometimes you just have to go ahead and do your own thing.

    Good luck to you.

  • Hard News: The Hager saga continues, in reply to Russell Brown,

I also have a letter from the IPCA.

I complained about police proceedure, biased investigation (such as it was) and their refusal to investigate my complaint against another party…even though I had wriiten evidence strongly indicating wrongdoing.

They sent a senior, uniformed officer to our home in a police car. Senior officer’s all guns blazing stance somewhat dampened when there was four of us….all witnesses waiting for him. Clearly he anticipated just the cripple and his nutbar partner.
    However….you can’t move mountains without dynamite…and that’s illegal.

So we got told to fuck off by the IPCA.

And, at the very least, someone got away with insurance fraud, and his cop mates backed him up.

I’m going to go and eat some more junk food and claim to be even more depressed/mentally ill than and obviously am.

Because I just don’t understand how Slater warrents so much attention.

This guy was found to be "depressed",

So, what do we do about it?

  • Hard News: What to make of the spray,

This... http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/files/pests/painted-apple-moth/pam-health-report.pdf may be of interest..if only for the rather slanted tone.

    My favourite bit....

"The Painted Apple Moth eradication programme has been highly controversial. Some residents felt they were being subjected to “chemically toxic bombardment”. These fears could not be assuaged by the disclosure of the component list of Foray 48B for commercial reasons. This led to the perception of a small number of individuals that public officials were not forthcoming with information and that there might be something to hide. Allied to this issue of public perception querying the validity of official health information is the history of occasional discoveries of harm associated with previously trusted products, e.g. asbestos insulation and lead in petrol."

Silly, neurotic, hypochondriac, tinfoil hat wearing nutbars!
