Brown is as credible as Banks – they are both victims of their own stupidity.

I'm sorry if this is beginning to resemble a pile-on, Dexter, but that's nonsense. Banks is facing charges of knowingly making a false election return, which happens to be a statutory declaration hundreds of individuals make every electoral cycle without undue trauma. YMMV, but if Banks is convicted that's a damn sight beyond common or garden "stupid," and in no way equivalent to adultery.

  • Hard News: Moving right along?, in reply to Russell Brown,

No. Worth was sacked by the PM after Key learned of the criminal complaint – of “a sexual nature” – a woman had made against him.

And IIRC, the barely sub-text to that sacking to Worth’s sacking was the real death knell to any any politician’s “longevity”: Never ever lie, dissemble or selectively recall when the Prime Minister asks you a straight question behind closed doors. Especially when your fudge comes back to make The Boss look evasive, ill-informed, unable to keep order in their own house or flat out shifty at a very public press conference.

Key couldn't maintain his confidence in Worth, any more than Clark could in David Benson-Pope after he (unwittingly) admitted on Morning Report he'd mislead her. Toughing out "swirling allegations" is one thing; expending political capital on someone who's not been upfront? Bugger that.

Yes – it may be hard for him – but he should just turn up and do the job he was elected to do and make no further comment on matters till the report comes out or a furher truck load of shit hits the fan.

Just to put this out there, Dexter, perhaps the staff and parents of Three Kings Primary School were even less keen than the Mayor to have their children turned into set decoration for a lurid press scrum that was obsessed with the Mayor's penis? Do the media really get to abdicate all responsibility for their own conduct, and the entirely predictable consequences?

Well, Len Brown did with the “interview article” yesterday in the Herald – I just can’t believe he won’t STFU.

But he can't win this media game, can he? He refuses to do interviews, cue the pompous, self-important "outrage to democracy" bullshit from the likes of John Armstrong. He doesn't attend events the press would normally not even front to and the media narrative is "AWOL Mayor refusing to do his job."

This place is like an echo chamber most of the time, and clearly that is how the residents prefer it. Fine. Everyone can get back to agreeing with each other and worrying about rightists.

Or, just to get crazy for a moment, you could call off the pity party and grasp your more OTT comments (which even Chuang herself hasn't made) raise perfectly legitimate concerns. I get you're not even going to try engaging in good faith with anyone else here, but stop playing the victim.

I’m not sure I follow. You are saying that I’m somehow in cahoots with a rightist clique of criminal dogs? And here was me thinking the Cultural Revolution had ended some time back.

M'kay, Seamus. It's been fun playing Whack-A-Troll, but the next time you want to call Brown an abusive stalker why don't go you do it on your own blog where you're the only person liable?

I'd quite like to learn Morrissey dancing - does it involve morosely flopping around with Dame Edna's leftovers?

I expect Craig is suggesting you’re risking Russell’s site getting held for libel by making claims that you don’t have a shred of personal evidence for, that could be damaging to the mayor’s reputation.

Quite – and I think reasonable people would hear some other downright criminal dogs being whistled for behind a cute turn of phrase like Seamus’. I’d note that APN is a well-heeled (and I’m sure heavily insured) corporation that can bear the risk of blowback from over-excited columnists and sketchy comments. Russell is none of the above, so a little more self-auditing on PAS than is the norm on Kiwibog is just nice.

It does seem a tad curious that while most of Bevan Chuang’s account seems to be accepted by commenters here, her belief that the mayor was offered and accepted free hotel rooms is not.

Well, I think Chuang’s claims were a lot more heavily qualified than was reported and, yeah… I find it rather hard to believe that the Mayor would deny the claims so strongly when there would be a paper trail that's not that hard to dig up. And, seriously, I find it hard to believe any hotel would (to be blunt about it) comp Brown a fuck pad when the whole point of the exercise is word of mouth PR.

as part of a mayoral campaign to pester that person into sex.

You know, Seamus, I think it would not only be tasteful and fair-minded but legally prudent to stop framing consensual sex (and neither party involved has said it was anything else) as… well, that.

Now, I am stuck with a mental image of Len failing to remove his underpants without taking off his trousers. Thanks so much, Craig…

I was more picturing Rudman giving himself a rhetorical auto-wedgie, and managing to make Whale Oil look relatively reality adjacent. Yeah... that's really not convincing you to step away from the brain bleach, is it?
