  • Speaker: I am a Really Useful Engine, in reply to John McCormick,

the market sets a fair value on people's contributions is not just flawed, it's lunacy

I've been privileged to work with long-time community workers who are so unrecognised - but that's not why they do it. Humbling. As is watching what parents do.

  • Speaker: I am a Really Useful Engine, in reply to Moz,

Anyone recall the outrage when the government stuck explosives on a logging helicopter and blamed us?

Shit, was that Native Forest Action days? So much important activism.

If that is so then, Minister, WHY do you then not launch a major national and government funded social housing construction program under the umbrella of Housing NZ?

Ideology that pays no attention to evidence. Can't argue with it, only overturn it by changing the government.

  • Hard News: Three Dreams, in reply to Brent Jackson,

I too have had a dream in which I realised I was dreaming, and woke up. I then started going about my day, but weird things started happening, and I realised I was still dreaming, and then actually woke up for real.

    seen Existenz?

Hmm. Keith Ng's visualisation shows a decrease in the MoH's national disability budget of $25m (or 2.2%). Thank goodness the level of need is going down steadily as boomers swell the ranks of the disabled elderly. Oh, hang on ..

for Health the issue is quality, not quantity of spending. Results can measured in things like the infant mortality rate, life expectancy e.t.c.

and metrics like unmet need, denied referrals, equity across sub-groups, etc

  • Polity: Mike's minute: Mike's maths!, in reply to Graham Dunster,

Surely when we spend our 67¢ it is GST inclusive, not exclusive.

Yes, but Mike and chums are obsessed with how much of it goes to the state as opposed to private pockets. For them that's a *moral* matter. Which is why I feel OK regarding them as both stupid and evil.

No surprise to hear meth testing is a cowboy paradise. NZ can't even regulate quality of crucial steel reinforcing mesh after #eqnz - or our fisheries or our polluted waterways. Our regulators appear to find their responsibilities inconvenient. Libertarianism ftw.

W&I probably gets to claim all those debts as being a positive on the “asset” side of the ledger.

Current Minister seems aware of that.

an online petition with more than 6000 signatures was created calling for Ministry of Social Development Minister Anne Tolley to wipe emergency accommodation debt accrued before the changes kicked in.

Tolley said she was aware of the petition, but had no plans to write off the debt as it would have substantial budgetary implications.
