  • Hard News: The future: be careful what…,

I'm under the impression that Football, or soccer as real New Zealanders call it - smiley face - is the most played team sport in the country. Rugby is possibly in about as much trouble as Sky...

SKY RIP - TVNZ made the right decision...whether they knew it was or not is debatable, but SKY's business model is almost as dead as newspapers.

The kids are already hooked up to Netflix etc using VPNs

As for Apple TV...even that is a dog...try a Western Digital Live box...looks the same, but is completely open to world...it has a few bugs but is nice and cheap.

  • Hard News: When "common sense" isn't, in reply to Deborah,

Hi Deborah...Palmerston North safe for cyclists? You obviously haven't been reading SwampThing...tut tut ;0). Palmy is really no better than anywhere else. In fact the closer I look, the worse it gets...except for the great new riverside cycle track. [http://www.swampthing.co.nz/article/107/]

  • Hard News: MegaBox: From f**k-all to zero, in reply to Russell Brown,

I do understand that people would want to use ad-blockers – although it sometimes seems a bit precious to me – but the level of arrogance you display about it is remarkable.

It's a pity that IS comes across as arrogant...I think he/she really is just saying the "system" is buggered...and he/she's right...it is. AdBlockers have simply destroyed it. A system that relies on unquantifiable numbers is not in any way viable.

Kim.Com's hack is just confirming it by playing with the possibilities its weaknesses present...an un-constructive waste of time and talent perhaps...but his super-ego seems to enjoy it...and it may provoke something good.

Not an advertising solution to dying media - but [www.nsfwcorp.com] - a great and innovative news and comment outfit based in Las Vegas seem to be doing well with a combination of good content, design and a VERY reasonable subscription model - 3 bucks a month when I last checked.

    No ads...just excellent journalism.

  • Hard News: MegaBox: From f**k-all to zero,

It's not particularly nice...but we really do have to stop kidding ourselves. There is no accountability, no surety and no plan as far as web advertising goes.
Unless a publisher has TOTAL control of its pages, advertising on them is like pissing into the wind.
Media can't rely on readers being philanthropic as Hebe suggests. We, you and even the likes of Fairfax need to sort it...it's really nothing more than a fraud...a nice polite fraud...but a fraud none-the-less. (I feel really bad saying this...it's not particularly palatable...but its real)
Advertisers need to know they are being seen for their money to be worth anything. I would argue that very few websites can guarantee advertising eyeballs.

  • Hard News: MegaBox: From f**k-all to zero,

As someone who not only needs advertising for my website to survive, but has also paid for web advertsing, I'm all for Dotcom's Megabox.
As it stands at the moment web advertsing is buggered...there is no real business model for it and no-one has as yet come up with a solution. It is very vulnerable to fraud, manipulation and blocking - which in my mind makes it worth...just about nothing.
If the world's biggest (real) media organisations can't make money from it what chance do the small players have.
Kill it off Kim or whoever...web advertising, as it stands, needs to be put out of its misery so that we are forced to find something that actually works...for readers and publishers..

  • Hard News: Fact and fantasy,

The great thing about the 100% Pure brand is the way it makes all this debate possible. It forces people to ask questions. It demands comparisons. It's patently ridiculous, but wonderfully confrontational.
It's creators may not have done it on purpose, but they have left New Zealand with a gift. They could have come up with something less decisive..."New Zealand - it's really really nice". But where would we be with that?
It's a Catch 22 brand too. As soon as it's dumped, the powers that be will be open to the criticism - "Oh...so New Zealand's not as shit-hot as you thought it was...what's wrong?"
    Long may it live...100% Brilliant

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Do not disturb,

It was nice that Toy Love got the recognition they deserve...even if the setting was hideous. We waited up all night...way past our bedtime...to see the lovely old folk get their gongs. But was it worth it?
The voice-over while the band were up on stage was an embarrassment. Most of it was spent telling us all how their album sucked and how they hated Australia. The crowd must have been left wondering, through the haze of substance abuse, "WTF?".
It was one of the most negative award rundowns I've ever heard and sounded like it was cribbed from Wikipedia. This kind of analysis is fine for a documentary...but an award? Bizarre.
If you want a nice story about Toy Love check out this tale from David Geary...it's about The Skeptics, but has a great Toy Love tale of their gig at Palmy Boys' High.
