  • robbery,

So for the works that you've retained sole control of, where might I legitimately acquire your stuff from, other than you?

I don't have a monopoly on 'songs'. you can get 'song's off other people. some people give them away. some of them are not to your liking.
you don't have to read the bone people, you could read the remaining 6 chapters of that e book,

it depends what you are inferring by monopoly. I read it to mean in the way it has been mentioned before in this thread where it is said the 4 major labels own and control a huge swag of material.

There's always new material being made which isn't part of that monopoly yet, and given easy ways to self distribute may well not need to become part of it.
protection of law for that future possibility, (one where the creator manages their own works and receives fair recompense for it) seems a fair thing to ask.

  • Steve Barnes,

tell us more about how you resent the people who's stuff you want for free.

What resentment? there is no resentment.
If you, or anyone else for that matter, wish to try and entertain me and I am entertained. Then I shall applaud, you know, with that pointless banging together of the hands that is so common in western society. Or, if I find your actions and sounds so entertaining I wish to repeat that experience that so entertained, then I will find a way to repeat it.
If, on the other hand, your motive is to extract money from me by telling me over and over how great you are and that I must purchase your wares or join the squares, then I make my choice whether to do so or not. If you choose to produce so many copies of your works that they can be found in the bargain bins of low brow retailers as surplus stock then that is nobodies fault but your own. If there comes a device that can make as many copies of something that the original becomes worthless as a tangible piece of property then that's life. Get over it and get a proper job.

Maybe you should take some advice from your elders occasionally and desist with the tantrums.
Who ever told you life should be fair?

    See, you lost it there.

I like good music, and if takes people getting paid some money to work full time for the world to have good music, I'm in favour of that.

We'd be a lesser world if all musicians got 'proper jobs'.

Most musicians I know do have "proper Jobs"
The point is we should not "criminalise" sections of society to guarantee someones free lunch. The "Recording Industry" is a bubble who's time has come to burst. Do you recall a campaign during the 70's called "Keep Music Live"?
It was run by the musicians union and opposed by the recording industry. It was a reaction to "Disco"
Do you remember "Home Taping is Killing Music"?
I could go on but the point is that things change, shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted is just plain dumb.
You want me to buy something? make me want to buy it. Make it better than what I can get for free.

    you lost it there too.
who said it was free. it shows a lack of understanding of what goes into making your entertainment, like it some how magically appears finished on your tv, movie scree, laptop, ipod etc.
while some lunches cost less to make than others, none of them are free.

    and desist with the tantrums.

what tantrum was that, I had a decidedly big grin on my face as noted by the :) thing.
I'm cool with you expanding on what you see as valid arguments.
you've obviously arrived at your position through some degree of experience and thought and its illuminating to see what that process was.

as for no resentment, phrases like "Free Lunch", and "Proper Job" show a little don't you think, maybe not so much resentment as disdain?

that's an economic reality of a small country.
but furthering your argument are you saying that media should be created for free.
the other side of the proper job argument is that next to none of our talent will develop past what they can achieve in their spare time. and as you'll know spare time evaporates as the years go by.

"Recording Industry" is a bubble who's time has come to burst

recording industry is a loaded and vague term. who are you talking about specifically. the majors, everyone who ever put note, word or image to tape page or film and all the associated people who contribute to that effort, (equipment developers and makers, to tech staff, to office workers etc etc)?

    "Keep Music Live"?
It was run by the musicians union and opposed by the recording industry. It was a reaction to "Disco"

I remember musicians trying to battle replacement by discos ie people playing records. I don't remember the recording industry having any objection to it.

Do you remember "Home Taping is Killing Music"?

sure, and the much better catch phrase "home taping is skill in music"
The an order of magnitude difference between dubbing tapes for you friends and a free for all amongst strangers.

You want me to buy something? make me want to buy it. Make it better than what I can get for free.

how does your trusty convenience store owner deal with that issue?

    security measures.

you want to buy something? pay for it.

Although there were no "official" statements issiued on this at the time there were people (Ashley Kozac springs to mind, yes I am that old and I was there) who saw "Disco" as a way of improving sales of records that required no real bands. Session musos and producers, such as himself, could produce records without relying on real bands and live performance and the sales push would be through "Discos"
The "Rave on Robbery], rave on." was a reference to Buddy Holly, who generated a vast amount of cash for the industry but gained little for himself, for obvious reasons.

    @Lyndon
Yes, I was just listening to BFM's "The Wire" discussing that very article.

Yeah. He died in a plane crash.
