An aficionado! Fine luck! In the interests of education could you recommend some classics?
-
Very late on this one - and the thread now seems somewhat derailed, but...
"Analogously, a bartender is required by liquor laws to stop serving anyone they believe to be drunk."
but can't do anything about them walking into another bar...
Out of interest, is there anything to stop an 'offender' from joining up with another ISP? I know that doesn't stop the inherent injustice if someone is cut-off on the basis of accusation alone, but...
I like the earlier suggestion of cutting off the govt from key websites (such as ours, maybe Farrar's) with a front page or the like, saying, "this copyright holder licenses this site only for non-Governmental use, please click here if you're not from the Govt", then issue notifications when the Govt ISPs show up. Kinda childish, but a good way of testing the law. Providing it's possible under the copyright act to restrict viewing to a class of people on a basis other than censorship provisions (shuffles off to read Copyright Act...). Anyone?

@Samuel Scott
Word Up! Two of the best posts on this whole damnable business, and from someone in the business. Thank you and may the really naughty people win!

Friend of this blog Pat Pilcher writes in the Herald today about the blackout.
-
I reckon the image is copyright infringement, the music might be fair use; but this has had me chuckling all morning:
-
anth,
I imagine the person who did that would be sued into bankruptcy if they were not actually the copyright holder, or perhaps prosecuted. In fact I believe part of the advice given to the minister is that the remedy for anyone wrongly accused was to use the fraud provisions in the Crimes Act.
That could be difficult if the accusation came from overseas.
-
Parts of it are way sustainable. APRA had its best year ever last year.
Copyright incomes from synchronisation rights, performance rights and publishing are fine. Selling stuff is harder -- but that's in part because other forms of deriving money from the ownership of music copyrights have flourished.
Indeed, which is why so much of the RIANZ argument is lame. It's swings and roundabouts and pretty much all the major publishers are owned by the same corporates who own the labels.
Adjust and stop whinging you fuckers....
That said, having just returned from 2 1/2 weeks scouring rekkid shops in the tri-state area, the indie shops who supply niche seem to be doing pretty well. I just wish I still bought vinyl.

Sure, and I know mentioning the Scientologists really annoys certain people -- but they've got a very long, and squalid, history of using every legal tool at their disposal to harass and intimidate their critics. And for every one who has the means, knowledge and persistence to fight back, there's a half dozen more who fold.
A good analogy is that when Robert Maxwell died, he had over a hundred defamation actions running -- and a disturbingly high proportion of them were aimed at journalists who were asking ticklish question about the Mirror Group's pension funds. Some of them were backed up by major media organisations with deep pockets; others were freelancers who were financially ruined, and were left with their health in shreds.

@Mark Taslov
Recommend some classics, well that rather depends on your own predilictions doesn't it? For eg while I am generally all over Islays that excludes Bruichladich and Laphroaig, but your mileage may differ. However wrt Islay you can't go past Ardbeg and Caol Ila, the most balanced of them. Then there's the Islay that is unlike the others: Bunnahabhain, a great big, warm hug of a dram.Or if that is too much peat, smoke and seaweed for you then hop over to Cambeltown and pick up a Springbank, complex and creamy. If you like it but still hanker after some warming peat then they call their malt made with peated barley Longrow.
Anyway if you want to continue this my email is prashby at blueyonder d*t co d*t uk

ooo drools over Peter's listings-have 'em,love 'em, share 'em with cognoscenti but- mark taslov, I'd also reccommend Highland Park (person of Orkney descent speaking) and the Talisker, paticularly if you can get hold of some of the earlier ones (15yrold is blessed.)
I was thinking - hey, writing is a shit job, nobody loves us and we're all soon to subsumed within a Kindle - all these people talking about t-shirts. Y'know: set up an instant sloganed t-shirt business, right?
Bugger me. Cafe whatever-it-is- -
Lagavulin. :)

I supped a Springbank 15yo at the weekend, followed by a Caol Ila. Which was probably the wrong order to go about it, but, still, the contrast was remarkable.
I know you deeply disapprove of Speyside Peter, but I think the BenRiach range offers a great malt for the money, especially when they're charging $149 for Laphroiag these days. Some of them are even peated!
-
What was Seth's Speyside? That bottle rocked.

The Glen Rothes 1994.
Fruity right out the top of the bottle and it felt lovely in my mouth.

Lagavulin is the official sacrament of the Okarito Free Republic' the Frog is the quaffing water-of-life (it's available for $60ish south.) That is, we anoint new borns' heads - o no we dont! we drink it ourselves! with Lagavulin, and we drink La Frog on more ordinary special occaisions.
Celebrate with me good folk! It is, this day, the 25th year since 'tbp' was launched upon an unsuspecting world. Whoever would've thought it would turn up in Czechoslovakian? And I'm drinking it - and all family & friends good health - in
ur, Lindauer Special Reserve??
-
Lindauer? From sacrament to sacrilege. :)

Wow!
What a wonderful achievement.
It makes me think that it's nearly that long since someone showed me a copy of the Spiral edition and said, there's something special going on with this book ...
Congratulations.
-
Yes, congratulations. If I could magically ship you some bubbly in real time, it'd be a Cloudy Bay Pelorus..
-
And I wonder what the Czechs or Slovaks would be raising their glasses with?
-
Thanks Russell- and you're right Sacha - but almost all my most single malt goodies are travelling over the hill (where I hope to spend at least half a year for the rest of my life - probably curled up in my mother's cellar :)-
here's to (raising a wobbly flute) Marian Evans! (glug) Miriama Evans! (slosh) and the late and much missed Doctor Irihapeti Ramsden! (quench - well, that's that bottle finished then) because without Spiral collective 5 - which was them -nothing much would have ever happened with that paticular book...the best way for me to commemorarate the dead is to take a dram (O look! we just happen to have a wee bit of Lagavulin left here afterall!)
and go out towards the beach end where those koukou are calling so energetically, and pledge a troth to life - Slainthe! Kia ora! L'chaim! Prosit! Kempei! Tatou katoa! -
Do you know I became 'Keri Hulmeova' on the cover of that CS edition (and I think I have the only copy in NZ?) And I could definitely *read* some of it? (All editions have kept the Maori - Finnish, French,Dutch, whatever, but it was so reassurring to read it in the CS version. You know, it could've been a Landrover maintenance manual they'd translated otherwise.)
Them, raising glasses with? My lovely heathen Latvian neighbour Andris says- Piss.
-
O, I'd prefer the Cloudy Bay (makes mental note to check it out...)
-
Kia ora, Islander. Congrats on the 25 year anniversary
-
Huia do a fine local bubbles too.
