  • samuel walker,

    oh no.

the last thing i need, when sitting down to read the normally warm fuzzy feelgood world section of granny herald, over a nice bowl of muesli, is a reminder of mr Robbery!

hee hee hee, you love it :)

As I've stated though, as a media consumer the free for all is lovely, but it was never going to last, and really it shouldn't, but enjoy it while it does.

is this the bit where I get to say "I told you so"....

    ok, i'll get my coat.

biggest indie bands around a profit but had a 65% no pay portion, it might pay not to put too much faith in that approach once the novelty of it has died down.

BTW Radiohead are saying, in the recent Mojo, that figure is substantially wrong

    not so fast Robbery.

It may not actually spread everywhere, It may not actually last, and ISPs may find they have trouble policing it.

It would have a major effect on many ISPs revenues I think. as people downgrade their plans. Because they wont need the quantity. So many of them [ISPs] may find ways to ignore it.

Plus some cunning L33t type will certainly be able to twist the already usable Tunneling option so that ISPs will have no idea what the data actually is. Shouldnt be too tricky I imagine.

    garden hose, meet tap.
Its what I' do if I wanted to cut of the trade routes. shut off the roads, put boarder patrols up. people will still get through though, but less.

not that you liked anything McGuniness said but it may all be irrelevant if it goes towards the subscription service model where you don't own any music, you just rent access to it. That way everyone has the biggest music collection in the world.

Now we'll have to contemplate what we're going to do about having the snob value of music removed. if everyone has everything then how can we look down our noses at those who don't have the rare b side to that obscure Norwegian bands 3rd deleted single. will anything be deleted?

  • robbery,

Are you talking about Farian or Napier-Bell now?

    napier bell.

If you are talking MV? Really, the joke in all that was on the American industry.

well really the joke was on the music consumer who were dupped into believing those 2 guys in the videos and on the covers were anything much to do with the music that was coming out of the speakers.

Not a big transgression for those familiar with the makings of music, (the pretty face singing is only a small part of the equation but it makes it more manageable to focus on one or 2 key faces) but this instance pushed the envelope and lets face it, it was a straight out lie to the public which I think crosses the boundaries.
its as bad as putting some teen hunks face on your face book site. its primary aim is to deceive and there's too much of that allowed in the world to day as it is.

    does it really matter ?

yeah, I think it does, less tricks and lies in selling all kinds of products would be a good thing all round. There are regulations for that in advertising so supposedly MV broke those laws in presenting the 2 guys as the singers/musicians/producers of the content of the disc. Did Napier Bell have anything to do with MV? I'm sure he wouldn't put that on his CV

no, because it was the record company in the US, Arista, who changed, without Farian knowing, the credits to include fake vocal credits, and who gave the "band' a grammy for best new act.

The kids who bought the records don't give a toss at the end of the day. The joke was on the industry.

the consumer very much does give a toss, which might explain the public outcry and ridicule of the 'band' that made them a worldwide joke.
almost all the music fans I know very much care when their being lied to. The new wave of low fi artists are taking it to extremes rejecting anything that sounds like it had a technically knowledgeable person involved in it.

and on top of that I care that there is some degree of reality that goes into the sentiment of my music. my gag reflex goes mad when I see immaculately dressed teens miming to on multimillion dollar sets playing vastly expensive instruments bought for them by daddy singing about how hard their life is on the street.

content matters, not to everyone, but it really really does.

Its a very commonly put forward view.
A few of you're comments re ingrained deceptiveness probably don't read as love letters, and who could blame you.
As I said, I'm not a fan of em myself, but I can see them for what they are.

No one in this discussion has stated that. It is a long long time since I have heard anyone justifying their piracy with such a statement

I still see that sentiment expressed regularly. I saw 'authority' figure andrew dubber say just that on the nz radio site last year. Yes the 4 people commenting on this thread may not be saying that but it is a commonly used argument in the larger world, most often made by youff and one worth addressing.

It wasn't worldwide Rob, it was American outrage and self embarrassment. Everybody else knew. Just as they know that Britney doesn't really write those songs.

who's this everybody you talk about.
Mrs smith from down the corner shop didn't know,
all the people at the work barbie didn't know, (or care)
most of em think britney does write her insipid little songs,
I definitely remember a local out cry, and a british one,

fact is it was a lie to the public, they were the scapegoat for a common practice (although never so blatantly pulled off) and then it was back to business as usual.

who here would rather pay $100 to go see a band mime to backing tapes rather than play the things properly live themselves.
given the choice in the plastic world I'd like them to make some attempt at conveying something of themselves to me, just a token gesture would surfice

Gotta agree with Mr Grigg on this one. The 'people' didn't care, they were just embarrassed to be reminded of how they went nuts for MilliVanilli (bigger in NZ per capita than anywhere else, I believe). Sadly, no-one has any excuse to explain their love of Achy Breaky Heart.

Just as they know that Britney doesn't really write those songs

Gotta dis__agree with Mr Grigg on this one. I don't think the 'people' know that when Kylie, Madonna, Britney, et all get a song credit it's because their contract demands it. It's how they get paid (Britney earns $700+k __a month because of it). Often all they've come to the studio with is an 'idea' or a chorus lyric. But everyone 'collaborates' in the studio and WOW! a hit is born. Sometimes the collaborations are so good that the songs are already written and demo'ed before the artist even gets into the studio.

my gag reflex goes mad when I see immaculately dressed teens miming to on multimillion dollar sets playing vastly expensive instruments bought for them by daddy singing about how hard their life is on the street.

It's not always 'daddy' paying, but there is one guy who likes to be called 'daddy'. As you can see, those kids paid their dues. [disclaimer ~ all allegations are just allegations until Pearlman is proved guilty in a court of Law!]

who here would rather pay $100 to go see a band mime to backing tapes rather than play the things properly live themselves.

The masses have spoken, and they much prefer to pay $100 to be entertained and nevermind if there are some 'production tricks' to make us go WOW!. The only concert I went to last year was Pink (long story, don't ask), and watching Transporter 2 on TV the other night I soooo realised where Pink got the 'inspiration' for one of her stage routines from.

  • robbery,

Internet users who illegally download music and films could lose their access to the web under legislation aimed at cracking down on those who flout piracy laws. Powers being drafted by the government will compel internet service providers to take action against customers who access pirated material. The Department of Media, Culture and Sport will recommend the plan in a green paper on the creative industries to be published this month, a source with knowledge of the paper said. Under the new sanctions users will face a “three strikes” regime. A warning email will be sent for the first offence, followed by suspension from the service and finally termination of the internet contract.

A draft copy of the green paper said the government “will move to legislate to require internet service providers to take action on illegal file-sharing,” although it has yet to decide if information on offenders should be shared between the ISPs, the Times reported. The government has come under increasing pressure from the music and film industries to penalise users who download pirated files. Although piracy is illegal, prosecutions are rare. The UK’s four largest internet providers - BT, Tiscali, Orange and Virgin Media - are already in talks with studios on a joint voluntary agreement to share information on web violators. But under the legislation they could be forced to cut off customers. ISPs which fail to enforce the rules could face prosecution, and suspected customers handed over to the courts. Similar laws already exist in many countries but ISPs hardly disconnect someone, as they get money from such a user.

and even though our esteemed panel of experts are skeptical the people at Releaselog the piracy advocate scene group had this to say

This law could easily change everything…

The cover was changed completely in the US. Vocal credits were added..the original made it clear that Farian had made it. The vids were made in the US (everything was remixed in the US so the vids had to be made there). The original European videos for the two big hits had the guys dancing and walking but not singing. There are tens of thousands of albums of throwaway pop or disco with models on the front and Europeans don't seem to be taken in. The only real fuss about MV came from the US, and at the time there was much bemusement that they actually thought they were a 'band'..I mean, look at them...seriously....

Farian actually fought the branding of these guys as a band all along (but happily took the cheques I'm sure).

Really, I'd be surprised if 50% of the stuff on the singles charts in 2008 actually featured the vocals of the 'act' in any real form. They might have elements but thats about it. Its pop music....The Beach Boys didn't play on their records until 1967 (although Brian did create them), Chris Spedding played the guitar and bass on the Sex Pistols album, who knows who was on half the Motown stuff. Bands like N'Sync had little to do with making their records and have usually mimed on stage to them. Madonna mimes much of the time (and I bet we don't know who is on each actual recording). I know of at least one 'credible' NZ album that was made when the artist was not present for much more than a few overdubs and the photoshoot.....it goes on and its pop. Always will be.

Farian should have got the grammy himself, he was a master craftsman and still is. I don't like the music but I can appreciate it for what it was.
