  • Hard News: Family Matters: a post about 2020,

I have had an account here forever, and although I scan the content semi-regularly I haven't commented in, well, ages. Russell, I know this was a deeply personal post, but also found it outwardly looking and very helpful for others. Also wanted to let you know, that NZ has its challenges (including lockdown) but please don't forget how normal your lives have gone back to being... I am in Canada and in my 10th month of working from home and only leave the lifestyle block for grocery shopping and takeout once a week. We're limited to household bubbles still, and even over summer where "in person" dining was allowed, we did not (we're both Biomedical Scientists - that crazy thing led to our current second wave). Kia Kaha to you and your family Russell and wishing you and planet earth peace, health and happiness for the Christmas season and beyond into the New Year.

  • Hard News: Drugs and the road forward,

Thanks for this thoughtful analysis. I cannot believe in the face of 40+ years of research that anybody is even considering going back to the Nixon era “war on drugs” and/or Reganite claptrap about “just say no”.

I simply don't believe that welfare recipients have a right to the same standard of living as people that work for their living.

Thanks for that, I thought the cartoon was directly aimed at me - see my reply to Moz to clarify about "winning" ...not the Charlie Sheen type :-)

Sorry for going missing yesterday (work). I think communism is a failed ideology because (1) humans are not perfect enough to all settle for begin equal [so some try to be "more equal than others" H/T Orwell) and (2) I worry that communism doesn't promote excellence in all, but tends towards central distribution (i.e. averageness for all) and that's just not good enough for us as human beings to aspire to - excellence for all (whatever your definition of excellence it).

Ummm does anybody here actually read the posts. I said people need to learn how to pick themselves up when they "lose". It was in quotation marks. Meaning that a personal/professional loss is just that it doesn't make any individual person a loser. God, you guys are a tough crowd.

And FWIW I totally stand by my points about winning and losing in life. BenWilson gave an awesome example above where, by no real fault of his own, his brother ended up with a large country plot of no real value. I mean, that's a "loss" in anyone's books. But it sounds like he picked himself up and kept going. That's what every single one of us needs to do in order to keep our lives on track.

And as to the "Grammar School Sporting Event" comment. Grow up.

Your reply to #5 is just insulting. I am not going to give you my life history (mostly because its one of your business), but I could equally cry "bad small NZ town, broken home, abusive father" etc. That attitude is complete BS in the face of a determined approach to life.
