  • Hard News: Memories of the news, in reply to Russell Brown,

Yes the Wahine! 3 years old and no playcentre that day for me - I had just started and was so disappointed. The noise of the wind up in Karori was incredible. I thought a plane had landed on our lawn. The Wellington Museum down here has a terrific little visual exhibition with actual footage that is so poignant... plus all those stories about the boilermakers and the federation of labour - I thought they actually ran the country not the PM - I thought boilermakers sat around boiling up kettles all day...

Or should they be given a second chance and become.... let's say an MP?

  • Hard News: Sky and 2020,

So...... this deal fell over because some blokes were fretting about being able to afford to pay for coverage of rugby and cricket???? what if the deal had provided enhanced access to arts, culture, design, film (independent film I should say) performance and other aesthetic pursuits? What about more access to more comment, discussion, debate, ... not just in NZ but internationally??? Unlikely I know, but surely it can't be all for the sake of RUGBY!?!?!?

  • Hard News: Obscuring the News, in reply to Russell Brown,

Doesn't this rejection by Not the onion mean that nzherald.co.nz is breaching some of the basic codes by which journalism stands or falls? Stealing content is just a simple way of saying plagiarism - isn't it??? (But easier to spell and the digital 'kids' don't have to google it to find out the meaning)

  • Hard News: Orcon IRL 5: Media and Journalism, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Well it certainly means that "journalism" (crickey - whatever that is these days) is not valued like other professions. So it's not the talk it is the content - look at how much 'free' content you get in a paper these days - in the Herald from the Rant and Rave column to the soapbox opinion pieces to the stories driven by All Blacks on Twitter...

  • Hard News: Orcon IRL 5: Media and Journalism,

Well gotta say - freshly empowered with my LLB - and about to embark on a new career - I have had some interest from employers BECAUSE I have worked as a journo so I'm maybe more hardened to the world (I can interview clients that's for sure) and I could bang on about being 'mature' but you get my drift.... maybe journos in this country anyway can't be journos forever and need career#2??? If for no other reason than because the cents per word rate for a feature back in 1998 when I started freelancing was 45-50 cents and today 19 years later it's - hallooooo the same..... I think even flipping burgers has had a pay rise....so what message is that sending folks???

  • Speaker: Are there opportunities within…,

I've been back at Uni the last 2 years - and the students just get bigger (and more by the year. If you can get them young and sort them out do! By 18/19/20 it's almost too late. The institutions are churning smart people but they sell the dumbest food. You can buy high sugar drinks by the truckload. Had a late night finishing an essay? Grab a bottle of V and slug it down before a lecture. Then I watch students jiggling and wriggling for the first hour of a lecture followed by the inevitable sugar let down body flop in the next. They use lifts and escalators instead of stairs and gobble down chips and chocolate from vending machines. Some of them are so ignorant about food and what it does to them, I despair. One tubby girl told me - without a trace of irony - that water breaks down fat particles so she buys bottles of the stuff and glugs away all day. Another male student says he doesn't eat meat because it's full of hormones! Go figure.

  • Hard News: A Stand for Quaxing,

The photo from the Netherlands reminded me - hardly anyone LOCKS their bike there - and many of them had this neat box in front for wayward toddlers and shopping - not tied down or helmeted or anything - they just sit there and let Mum push - and she can - safe in the knowledge that she won't be mown down. In Tokyo you could leave your bike leaning outside any shop or cafe unlocked all day and it would be fine (but of course they also provide beautifully maintained, practical bike stands too) I think part of your problem is the fact you have to continually LOCK it up- even just to run into Fruit World??? Crickey.

  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak, in reply to Deborah,

Spot on Gordon. Also I hate the artificiality of using this, rugby, cycle paths to try and engender some warm and runny feeling about the country and by default about Key's government (his so-called legacy) When this flag process was started by the late Lloyd Morrison in 2005/05? the country was in a very different place economically, but also socially and culturally. Remember when working in the arts equalled having a credible job that contributed something valuable to society? Now making money from property deals is top of the list. Meantimes some of the most vulnerable in society (special needs kids, 65+year old people living in 'social housing', beneficiaries, those who need legal representation but can't afford a lawyer etc) are really the legacy that Key will leave behind.
