The executions on the beach in Liberia following the April 1980 coup.
I'm sure there were other events I had paid attention to before that but the visual memory of that has stuck with me. Had to look it up just now to find out the details - the date and even the place escaped me - but the images and video are exactly as I remembered.
Congratulations Russell, Public Address, and the community here.
I've been reading since the very beginning yet I rarely comment - the intelligence, wit and breadth of knowledge on display has often left me feeling any point I might add has been covered - and stated far better than I could. I'm an avid consumer though: as an ex-pat (even if only across the ditch) this has been an invaluable source of NZ insight and a kind of lifeline for me.
Here's to at least 10 more years.
Not sure whether it's been covered already (busy day - haven't had the usual slacking-off time) but the only change I'd like to see to the comments would be the ability to 'see all' comments. Or at least more than the 20 currently allowed - it gives a better sense of continuity when you can quickly scroll between earlier & later comments in a thread. Especially since several topics may be being discussed at once - which is one of the wonderful things about PAS.
I don't comment here often but I love this community. Even Craig. Or is that especially? I'm never sure..
And even that scourge of public events, who has made a career (I suppose you can call it a career) out of removing clothes in public, was removed after, well, removing her clothes in public. We all know her name don't make me write it.
I've been out of NZ for a while but this is odd - there's really someone who does this regularly? Are they an attention seeker or just suffer from a mental illness?
Thank you Emma, that's a beautiful and evocative article.
Now I'm desperately homesick.
What is this - the Department of Statistical Rugbyology? I no unnerstand whatchu all talkin' 'bout...
But on the other hand I do loves me a pretty graph! Well done Hadyn.
Ahhh, LSD... Happy days. Much better than weed for me - less of tendency to overeat and stare at the tv, much more time spent feeding ducks and talking about sunsets. Yes, I am a hippy.
Re that Stuff (via SMH) article about Lindsay McDougall - since when has the manager of Anthony Callea been known as an 'artist'?
Lyndon - that review is gold. Well done.
I've got to say, gutted as I am about the ABs loss, I'm glad I live in Australia. Growing up in NZ I loved watching rugby with my dad, but as I got to my late teens I was turned completely off the game by realising that most of the people that follow the sport were meatheads and people I'd not wish to associate with. Admittedly at that age most boys aren't worth associating with.
It took about 15 years to merely enjoy watching it again, and then only shifting to Aus to get truly involved emotionally with the All Blacks. Union is a poor third/fourth sport here and most people honestly don't give a crap - and the meatheads that I'd hate to be lumped in with uniformly support League.
Don't know where I'm going with this except to say that being at a remove from the cult of rugby has allowed me to really appreciate it again. And to support the ABs without feeling like I'm supporting the dickheads like Deaker...
Argh! I've got to stop reading these bloody comments - you're making me nervous....
