  • Hard News: New Old Left?,

Here in Denmark, they have a proportional system that is quite different to our own. But one element I find interesting is that in many of their elections (not the parliamentary for some reason) they allow parties to enter agreements to share surplus votes between them.

Would it not be possible to allow a form of STV (just not voter driven), the reallocation happening according to a pre-election list provided by the party? Vote wastage would be dramatically reduced and the effect of a threshold minimised. A leftish voter that wanted to vote Greens when polling 4.9% will be reassured that if they don't make the threshold then their vote will be reallocated according to the Greens preference presumably Labour or the new McCartford party.

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

TVNZ spokeswoman Andi Brotherston said the website was an independent news organisation.

"[It] is part of TVNZ's news and current affairs department, which has its editorial independence enshrined in legislation."

Its impressive how quickly TVNZ have changed from defender of 'say what you really think' television to issuer of weasel word dodge the real issue statements the moment that they are the focus of criticism.

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

Claiming a term that belongs to all of us is not ok. It's aggressive.

So I can't use a term to describe myself that belongs to ALL of us?
Your logic escapes me. Unless you're implying that I'm excluding others from using it, which considering you don't know me is 'not ok. It's aggressive'.

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

Actually @TracyMac you could go to the source .

What's interesting looking at the table is that a hundred thousand people, who have had no axe to grind in our 'ethnicity' debate, have put themselves down as British, Australian, American, Canadian, Chilean, Argentinean, Belgian, Swiss etc.
These are not racially or linguistically distinct 'groups'. They appear to find their identity most closely aligned with their nationality. Why are New Zealanders different?

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

The whole point of the census question is about ethnicity, and by allowing the NZer label in that context, the question is made meaningless

How about all the people who wish to deny my ability to identify my 'ethnicity' as an NZer check out the results of the question from Stats NZ. The Ethnic Groups they report on refer to large numbers of either nation or region based groups that wouldn't meet your strict definition of 'ethnicity' either.
E.g. American, Australian, Chilean, West Indian, Belgian, Shetland Islander, Taiwanese

  • Hard News: Yet More Hobbit,

Well said Paul (Williams to be clear).

Key needs to understand that while lots of moderates like me, that moved our allegiance from Clark to him at the last election, like the fact he is 'relaxed about' lots of things like flags on bridges. This blatant racism is something we are not 'relaxed about' and don't expect him to be either.

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

Aren't we getting distracted by the purity or not debate?
Isn't the correct question; do the benefits of making the system more complicated outweigh the costs?

The next question is if you have $250 mil to redistribute, is this the best use? Esp. considering that it benefits the well-off more than the poor, financially at least.

Which leads to the political own goal in this. How can Labour attack the recent tax cuts/GST hike as regressive when they introduce their very own regressive tax cut?

  • Hard News: We invented everything,

The 1st time I got sucked into watching train-wreck reality tv was being in Europe when they showed Sylvania Waters on BBC about 1991.
Even felt a perverse pride in the feisty hard-drinking nouveau-riche mum Noeline being a Kiwi...
I'm guessing it'd look pretty tame these days.

  • Hard News: Space for Ol Dat I See,

I've gotta boast about the great bikepath system here in DK (which to my shame I barely use - the public transport sytem is fab as well). Apart from Copenhagen being riddled with bikepaths, here's a map of the nationwide Cycle 'Motorway' system.
