How is "we worked really fucking hard to make this" a viable defense of a show that people don't like. I worked really hard to bake a fruit cake last christmas (it was hours and hours of work) and it still tasted terrible. Amount of effort is not a reliable predictor or quality.

  • Access: The Blue Inhaler, in reply to Hilary Stace,

I found this PDF, which would suggest they have at least been talking about it since 2012.

    http://asthmafoundation.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Whatis_Buteyko.pdf
(the copyright in this is 2010).

Another thing is that they may need to tune their advise to the lowest common denominator (ie someone who won't do the techniques correctly no matter how often they are shown etc) and for that level/type of person maybe the drugs are the only thing that works consistently. Also it starts getting pretty slipperly slope, if Buteyko (which makes some pretty dubious claims) gets coverage what about other potentially more quack based techniques.

  • Up Front: Well, Read Women,

Ann Leckie is also a good read, then Naomi Novik (for your dragon fix), Kristine Rusch (noirish fix) and Cherie Priest (for your post-apoc fix) are also good choices (IMHO), and I strongly recommend "The Golbin Emperor" by Katherine Adderson/Sarah Monette.

If I can be so bold, does anyone have recomendations for woman writers doing hardish sci/fi similar to Alaistair Reynolds or Neal Asher

Clearly, and that's the sensible thing to do. Much better than "tough"

But no parking was going to be removed, it was just that other people might want to use it.

Well I guess thats a matter of opinion, and Auckland Transport tends to disagree with that position. They have consistantly taken the position that street parking is not a right and can disapear at any moment. As it should be as it is public roads paid for by everyones rates.

Street parking doesn't belong to the property. It belongs to everyone, so complaining about street parking being used is a wash (and I live in a area that has commuters parking every morning so can't park in front of my house ever).

    Just read this article then.

    http://www.metromag.co.nz/current-affairs/skypath-the-path-of-most-resistance/

and consider that the author tried quite hard to not present the NRA as a bunch of crazy nutters. The more you see of their feedback, the less credible it all becomes. and one of their main complaints is that the onstreet parking will be taken up by people who are not them (and the correct response to that is "tough"). And then consider that they blocked the council wanting to put in a cycle lane to the bridge in preperation for the skypath. It almost looks like they want skypath to be built to devonport on a non existant bridge (and to be honest, a cycle path to devonport from the city would be amazing).

Is she using the patronage numbers for a day as a hourly figure? I can't see that attracting the 6000 per hour that she seems to be implying.

That is truely insane. Maybe thats how being super wealthy works. you go to the window shop purchase some new windows for your house, get the glazier/builder to install them to make sure they fit, and then put the old ones back in. Just so you have some spares or something.

Why the fuck would we even need a multiterabyte fibre tap, if it wasn't going to be installed, or there wasn't another one somewhere.

  • OnPoint: "Project SPEARGUN underway", in reply to Ian Dalziel,

The thing is they don't need to do anything as fancy as a underwater intercept on the cable. They can just put equipment in at the Hawaii base stations and then put gag orders on the operators. Of course the operators may not actually know there are taps in place, as it could simply be a replaced cable tray with the taps in it. And from everyone one elses perspect it would look like a normal (if full) fibre tray.

Also you can tap fibre leads by simply bending them and collecting the light that doesn't reflect, and all the operator will notice is a slight increase in attenuation. Which could well fall within the operational norms for a undersea cable, as it likey will continue to settle over time (considering in the open sea, they are just draped over the sea bed and hang between mountains/ridges).
