  • Cracker: Johnny Foreigner & the Auckland…, in reply to Sacha,

From the Herald article about the taxi driver abuse: 'The company had about 12 cabs and around 50 per cent of its drivers were of ethnic origin. They came from a variety of backgrounds including Pakistani, Indian, Fijian and Maori.' So does someone only have an ethnicity now if they're not white?

My 5-year-old son has been obsessed with the Star Wars movies since he was 3. He loves the old trilogy and the new one. He doesn't give a toss for the good guys (except when Han Solo is in the carbonite) but wants to be the baddies - Darth Vadar, Darth Maul, Anakin. I think he'd only seen the new versions of the old trilogy on DVD and the look on his face was priceless when he watched and old episode on VHS at Nana's and Anakin didn't appear at the end with Obi Wan.

  • Up Front: It's Not Sex, and It's Not Education, in reply to Paul Williams,

I decided when I was pregnant with my second child that I would introduce to my son the biology of what was happening. He was 3.5 at the time. It was as much for my benefit as for his, because I reckoned I could get in some practice for talking about this stuff so that when the trickier questions started to come as he got older we'd both be comfortable talking about them. He loved the book I got, and especially liked 'the purple swimming things'. He told anyone who cared to listen how the baby came to be in mummy's tummy. And we had some pretty funny questions, like 'do the sperm come out when Daddy's at work?'. I figure the questions and the complexity of my responses will change with his physical and emotional maturity.

  • Hard News: Auckland City Nights, in reply to Russell Brown,

The vast majority of people we serve and talk to are really enjoying the total Wynyard Quarter experience, especially the daytime crowds and families. The wide wharf promenade, playground, the 'swimming pool you can't swim in' (according to my young son) under the wind scuplture, feeding the seagulls while sitting on the edge of the wharf, curling up in the funnels, and wandering over the footbridge while admiring the views. The sunrise and sunsets are pretty special too down that end of town.

P.S. Non-immediate response due to three-month-old daughter who I'm guessing shouts louder than most folks when her lunch doesn't arrive in a timely fashion!
