    Re getting old....

Paul: wait til your kid plans to go to Otago after 7th form this and is wandering the web checking out the hostels down there. He rejects your old hostel cos there's no DSL in the bedrooms - ROFL

But hey, age is purely a state of mind and I agree with Rob that bands in their 40s do sound damn good.....or is that cos I'm in my 40s too??

  • Hard News: That's Entertainment,

RB: rather have the ads and let all find PA than to 'lock it down' under user-pays content.

Also, anyone shed any light on this....

Signed up for iTunes (yea yea teenagers had it for yonks mother finally gets around to it!) and joined NZ store too. Went to download USD1.99 file to be told only avalable to Visa cardholders with US billing address.

What's that all about? I'm willing to pay for the thing why do I have to live in Bushville to buy it?

  • Hard News: Launching into raunch,

The story anchored the Star-Times' feature on the rise of "raunch culture", which tended to magnify a lot of small things for dramatic effect

One does wonder what our so-called journalists honestly think of their reading publc.

How I long for the UK Sunday papers that used to take hours to read. The pages and pages and pages of book, art, music, food, wine, restaurant reviews; the seriously in-depth articles that didn't feature tits and bum journalism; the hard questions being asked....

Why is it that NZ really doesn't have this level of in-depth journalistic research - are we supposed to be so immature as to have short attention spans and therefore can't handle detailed writing that, God forbid, might run over 2 weeks?

  • Hard News: The Arguments,

Smacking with a bare hand on a bottom, hand or back of the legs as a last resort may be ok depending on the circumstances.

Belting kids across the head with your clenched fist; taking to them with the jug cord and leaving 3 pin plug indentations in their skin for hours after; using your leather belt, the poker, riding crop or whatever.....all WAY over the top and suggest an element of pre-meditation if you've had to resort to a weapon.

All the above were experienced by my mates at school; none ever experienced by me or my sibblngs. The tone of my mother's voice was enough to stop you dead in your tracks and time out on the rug whilst everyone else played on was sheer unadulterated hell.

Shouldn't our kids get the same protection as any one of us?

BTW what would have happened to me if seen...my youngest bit a chunk (missing skin, blood etc) out of my eldest and my instinctive reaction was to grab my son's arm and bite him hard so he understood the pain he'd inflicted on his sister .. Reasonable force? He was screaming, she was sceaming and I was a basket case bawling my eyes out.....he apologised, I apologised and he never bit anyone again.

  • Hard News: Testify!,

Trying to put aside my huge problems with the concept that religion has some kind of exclusive license on 'moral', if that's what they want, why don't THEY do it?

Couldn't agree more Emma, but then who am I to know the workings of the inside of people's heads.

  • Hard News: Testify!,

3 local schools in our area are having youth leaders from a local middle-of-the road church come in once a week after school to do a session with kids whose parents have given permission for their Jacks and Janes to attend. I don't have an issue with this as in my mind it's no different from Art, French or Kapa Haka classes - parental choice and all that.

Chatting with parents there seems to be a desire to return to some good ol' fashioned moral teachings though. Many are saying they think 'society' is losing the plot re behaviour - please, thank you, respecting older people, being grateful for what you have etc. One I was talking to on Monday is fearful we will end up like the UK - a mess of PC edicts from on high re crosses on buns, carols at Christmas, nursery rhymes referring to black sheep etc.

BTW, did any of you have pancakes last night seeing as it was Shrove Tuesday??!!
