Yep, six more years as expected. America is a strange place.

CNN is doing a long live show remembering Bourdain at the moment. Bill Buford was just on, speaking candidly. It's rather sweet.

Really wish there was a standard symbol indicating a bike loop. I had to jump a red light for the first time on a dual carriageway last weekend. Waited over a minute for a green light with no effect, no pedestrian button option - and this on a freshly sealed road through a new housing development. Clueless.

AA giddy with excitement at the prospect of more motorized vehicles:
It is something other motoring clubs are doing overseas
Actually my overseas motoring club covers all bicycles not just electric ones. Why extend benefits to one group of cyclists and exclude others?
A stranded (AA-card-carrying) cyclist is a stranded cyclist.

Impairment while driving is in the news here in Colorado fairly regularly, usually whenever some new statistic is released. They're still figuring it out. There isn't a reliable roadside test and even a blood test doesn't necessarily indicate impairment since frequent users become highly tolerant of it.
Random linkage: http://www.denverpost.com/2017/08/25/marijuana-impairment-testing/
I'm more afraid of drivers staring down at their phones than those driving while high, but expect this will be made an issue if full legalization ever looks likely in NZ.

Excellent article by the way.

Speaker: The Government lost the election, in reply to
So what happened to the recommendations from the 2012 Review of MMP. As I recall nothing was changed even there were at least 6 recommendations that would have helped a fairer system.
Oh that old thing: http://www.elections.org.nz/events/past-events-0/2012-mmp-review/results-mmp-review
A bit like Trump's attitude to Obamacare - can't get rid of it but certainly won't be going out of their way to improve it.
The most telling thing to come out of the referendum that preceded that review was that the most popular choice for a replacement if we did ditch MMP was.... FPP. A system completely unfit for purpose, at least if the purpose is representation.

Hard News: The Day After Tomorrow, in reply to
Most people I know in UK go back regularly (although appreciate that isn’t the norm everywhere), every 1-3 years so most can vote if they want.
Same - most of my friends in the UK go back every year or two, but then most of them are very high income IT types for whom it's not a burden. I'd much prefer the UK's 15 year policy, or at least some increase to the time window.
