    If you're after a classic sit-up-and-beg, give Mamachari (http://mamachari.co.nz/) a go.

To fix that link. Mamachari are good people (two friends of mine are part owners of the business, one works there).

Part of the reason for buying into the business is that it's about recycling (the bikes are imported from Japan and then restored and sold) and sustainability. They also have a flat employment structure - all the employees get paid the same, and they choose their own job titles. One for example has business cards that read "Imagination Officer".

If you want a simple, funky bike (they've only just recently got into selling them with gears as an option) for riding about town, go for it. They have resellers in a few places and sell online.

That's like me going head-to-head with a supertanker in a small sailboat in a crowded shipping lane expecting a ship the size of a small country to get out of my way. No matter what the rule of the sea says about power giving way to sail (yeah, yeah, I know there are variations but I'm talking about the principle here) it just ain't going to happen.

I should point out that if they actually knew the variations in question, they wouldn't have written this. No sailboat is going to expect a supertanker to give way to them.

It's putting in qualifiers that destory your argument, but not specifying them well enough to actually note that they destroy your argument that really impresses me.

Better yet: become a graduate science student.

But then you'll be a graduate science student, by definition a minion for your supervisor.

Is that part online? I couldn't see it.

His questioning was really two parts - why wasn't it released earlier [because it wasn't relevant], and then well why are you releasing it now [somehow it's now become relevant people now can understand what happened].

My impression after watching the press conference was that the team [Inspector, Mine CEO, Commission, Minister] were building us up to having less hope of this ending with any good news at all. The video was part of that.

3410, I think there's valid questions to be asked about the forward planning in terms of sourcing equipment before it's needed as well. I hope the post-whatever assessment looks at that.

  • Up Front: That's Inappropriate!,

Ever seen a beard on a prepubescent child? Or a woman?

I mean comparing an adult male with a beard to one without.

And comparison with women is likely to lead you to believe that it's the beard that makes people not grown up :)

Second robot arrives at West Coast mine site. Third one being sourced from WA, a 4th from USA.

This story says that there's only one robot in the world specifically designed for mine collapse.

I'd say it's exactly the same Canute-ish motivation in either case - to prevent the display of visible sexual signs.

I've never seen growing a beard as in any way relating to sexual signs or growing up. I can't really seem to think of beards as sexy in any way.

To me it's a sign that your ice hockey team is in a playoff run, so kinda the opposite of grown up really.

"Why didn't they just waterproof a robot" is possibly one of the stupidest things I've heard.

I'm picturing Selleys no more gaps. Apply liberally, obviously.

I'm also thinking that most people's understanding of what this robot is like comes from Short Circuit.

    "take all Necessary risks"

I don't even know what that means. Necessary to make every feel better that something is being done, even though that something is likely to make the situation worse?

Sometimes it is risky to rescue but that is the job.

I think you'll find the job is to take all reasonable risks.

If you want employees to start taking risks that are judged to be unreasonable, you're going to have to pay them a crapload more.
