I guess one man's "that's far short of being treated like a human being" is another man's "that's better than being beaten to death."
LOL nice one. I wonder which side this guy actually falls on?

This is an old trick by a hyperventilating McCully: create a sense of urgency and give people only one option. We gunna legislate!
We saw this when the clownish idea for a waterfront stadium was suddenly dumped on Auckland by That Other Guy. (Do we need to mention egress? Sixty thousand people leaving the place at the same time and not dispersing in different directions. Yep, that‘ll work!)
I can't see much equivalence. The 'clownish' idea to build something that would have been incredibly awesome and totally appropriate for the World Cup, would absolutely have required a shitload of urgency and overriding of due process. It was a massive project.
The alternative, building some pissly enhancement to our own local piece of shit that we embarrassedly have to call our premium sporting venue, is, as you say, on track and not in any need of great urgency. Particularly not when 'too much urgency' was exactly what derailed the alternative.
I can fully understand leaving town if you live near Eden Park when the time comes. I expect the entire suburb to turn into a congested collection of drunks.

There will certainly be tales and photos galore when I get back, but you’ll forgive me if I end up waiting until then, yeah?
Am I going to be the only one to not forgive?
I don't expect 2000 words a day or anything. But c'mon man, isn't when you are traveling the absolute best time to be active on your weblog? What you're doing is so interesting in it's own right that just posting pictures would almost do the trick. And I'm disappointed that you didn't give us some real insider stuff when you were in Bangkok.
Yes, travel is hard work, but isn't collecting your thoughts and booty at the end of a day at least a little therapeutic?
The only excuse I can accept is "no access to the net". :-)

It would be messy, though, and I can't see the Police pursuing it with any real vigour unless he complains loudly, and then goes public when they do a half-arse job and don't really push the matter.
I suspect the biggest brake will be the emails themselves. If he was actually using email to discuss his surveillance, then she has a lot of power if she has these mails and can leak them.
I'm reminded of a friend of a friend who lived and worked with her boyfriend, then decided to cheat on him with someone else in the office. He hacked into the email system and read enough of their correspondence to realize he was being made a fool of, confronted her with it and they broke up.
Now of course what he did was both against company policy and totally illegal. But it was never going to be raised by her, since the mails themselves were extremely dodgy.

mark, 'compare and contrast' has been a stock phrase in NZ education for ever. Russell was making a joke, acting like an English comprehension exam.

What perplexes me above all is that I’m not really sure what will constitute literacy or numeracy in 50 years time and it may be a risky strategy delivering teaching on the presumption that I do.
Yeah, but what else can you do? We don't have crystal balls so we teach kids literacy and numeracy because those were useful skills in our day. I'd be surprised if they don't continue to be. The form may change, handwriting may become a much less valuable skill (hopefully), the language will evolve, and there will always be dispute about what kind of maths kids need to know. But it seems likely to me that language and maths (whatever they become) will continue to be crucial skills for success.

National's use of urgency is, as far as I can see, a way of establishing authority. Apart from the economic measures, the use of urgency is not justified, but they need to stamp their right to rule onto our foreheads. New CEOs always do this, it's part of their established playbook that there must be a sacrificial sacking early on, typically on a flimsy excuse. That shows the troops the new boss is not a soft touch. Anything really mean is not likely to happen right early on, like the massive round of redundancies that budgetary cuts are likely to entail.
It's a way of setting the tone. To many people it will look firm and decisive, despite actually being meager and petty. So long as what is meager and petty is done decisively, it sends the important signals.

Selwyn College, Auckland, 80s. Wagging.
I did it a bit, maybe a week a year. Never caught. Good student, who cares?

Danielle, not sure what kind of librarian you are, but if you have to handle customer requests, then 'finding the answer in the shortest possible time' is exactly what is required. If you goof off in between, who would care, so long as the other chores are done? Only the worst kind of boss.
Isabel, I know kids demand a lot of attention, I have a son myself. But the level of attention can rise and fall. A constant drip feed of low level attention is not better than getting very intense attention for periods, and almost none at other times. I think it's a mistake to think you have to be constantly on call for the kids every whim. That's a recipe for boredom and depression, if you are not naturally suited to it.
Depends on the age of the child a lot. A newborn is perfect for a slacker - half of the time they are asleep. You can goof off then. So long as you keep them sorted while they are awake. My 2 year old is perfectly happy entertaining himself for long stretches, so long as you give him really good attention when the time is right. That suits me. I don't think there's anything wrong with getting bored with a game your child is playing, and moving off to some other activity. The important thing is that you do play with them regularly and attentively. Children need to learn that adults also need rest. Otherwise they will be horrors.
