  • Yellow Peril: the identity game,

I'm open to suggestions as to whether she should class as indigenous.

It's partly an inherent problem of categories - by necessity they are a form of gerneralisaiton and will break down in some circumstances. There's no guarantee that a category such as "indigenous" is always well defined.

  • Hard News: Doing the Rounds,

i remember wearing a crash helmet and facing police not much older than me wearing much the same. i remember thinking how aborrent apartheid was. but i also remember thinking was it the right thing to do to confront the rugby establishment with such violence? did we need to threaten disrupting games to get our message across - to threaten "terrorism" - as a Russian refugee in my maths class said to me.

i have some doubts about what went on. but clearly doubts are not allowed niow.

i'm sort of proud to have being apart of the apartheid movement but sort of ashammed too - for the arrogance and inolerance. i'm glad there are others who don't have glib answers to whether or not the supported the tour.

  • Random Play: The Roaring Silence,

I'm pissed with Labour for not ramming the damn thing thru. Mallard waves this great idea in front of our noses and then lets our local govt decide. It was dead from that moment on and they should have known that. The only way that it was going to happen is if Labour had just pushed it thru regardless.

Either Labour should have not suggested it our they should have ignored local govt. Now there's just a depressing sense of what might have been.

  • Speaker: The Hollow Men: Initial Impressions,

    Steven, all of Hager's conclusions.

Terence, we'll just have to disagree over what constitutes "far" but in this discusion it is being used to mean "beyong the pale" and I don't think dismising Douglas' views that way is very constructive.

For the record, I thought National overstepped the mark on race relations but there was a need to put an end to some of the silliness beong done in the name of the Treaty - something Labour realised aswell.

On economics, I'm completely underwhelmed by National having close ties with business. That's as much an issue as Labour's ties to uniuons.

  • Speaker: The Hollow Men: Initial Impressions,

I used the term "conspiratorial" rather than the others you mention because I was being polite. Hagar also used a lot of facts with corngate - that didn't make his conclusions any less bizarre. He did the dedate on GE a diservice and I can't help but think he'll achieve the same sort of thing again.

James, I don't support alot of what Douglas stands for, but I do make a distinction between conservative policies that are a legitimate part of political discourse and the far right.

  • Speaker: The Hollow Men: Initial Impressions,

I can't see any contradiction in the views that Hagar tends to the conspiratorial and that a close up view of behind the scenes Labour would be any less edifying.

So Hagar has shown that the comparison between politics and suasage making still holds. Big deal.

We've come to an sorry state in NZ politics when Roger Douglas is considered "far right" - I generally reserve that for the National Front. As for all the accusations of racism, who is currently Labour's Minister for Foreign Affairs?

  • Hard News: Of course it's about the book,

There's a lot of dots out there and Hager has always had an idiosyncratic way of joining them. Waring's preface was particularly underwhelming.

I'll be pleased to see Key as leader but I'm yet to be convinced that there's anything here more than the usual backroom deals that no duobt Labour could also be embarrassed by aswell.

Just like with corngate all this looks overly conspiratorial and not great for political discourse in NZ. There are issues like how NZ can make its way in the world that are more important.

  • Hard News: Assault by Monstrous,…,

i support the waterfront stadium but thought the choice of Dobbyn unnecssarily divisive. He's become a poltitical activist and many NZers disagree with his politics. As for his lyrics, I'd prefer Ellen DeGeneres' dancing.

  • What Happens: The Sequel!,

So, Iran isn't really developing the bomb - it’s all some UN inspired conspiracy. Right. Just like psycho Armadinajad didn't really deny the holocaust and doesn't really want to destroy Israel, even though that's what he says every other day.

But the funniest bit is "And please don't bring up appeasement of Hitler, your nation didn't exactly take a stand there." Yeah, those evil Americans, what did they do to oppose Hitler? Maybe a visit to the beaches of Normandy would be of benefit to some.

And then there's Vichy France and Russia's non aggression pact with Hitler. Its little wonder they both wound up opposing Saddam's overthrow.

There are 2 sides at the moment. One side believes the US is the root of all evil. The other believes the US is a flawed democracy standing up to dictatorships like Saddam, North Korea etc.

I chose flawed deomcracy over dictatorship.

Another question is "will war with Iran be more likely if Iran gets the bomb?". I'd argue yes. Those theats against Israel are not empty.

Surely the question is "what can we do to stop Iran getting the bomb?" Maybe not alot but it depends mostly on what the clerics really want.

I don't see how you can say the US and Europe have made this issue a low priority. There's all the US and Europe UN diplomacy re Iran and the US inspired six party talks re NK.
