  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

I tell you what, it was fascinating watching the #blackout unfold when I checked my interwebs during breaks at Webstock. It one stage @starlajo leaned over and showed me @stephenfry's blackout.

BTW, Webstock '09 is brilliant. The Town Hall is already buzzing with all sorts of webiliciousness.

  • Up Front: Isn't It Romantic?,

a montage of Mills and Boon covers through the ages

I love the cover of the 1924 book "Jungle Love: A tropical tangle", with a native in an enticing loin cloth standing over a white lady who is either dead, unconscious, or preparing herself to be ravaged by his dark junglistic manlove.

My pick for the dominant future interfaces are voice (including speech to text) and gesture

I think it would take a major breakthrough to replace the stupid old keyboard.

The problem with speech-to-text is that speaking uses a totally different part of the brain to typing/writing. I can usually express myself much more fluently when I'm typing than when I'm speaking. And an extreme example is some severely autistic people who cannot speak but who can freely express themselves when they write or type. Even a handwriting system wouldn't work so well because I can type faster than I hand-write.

And as for a Minority Report-style gesture system, well, wouldn't your arms get tired doing all that swooshing?

  • Hard News: Effectively Friday,

The weirdest part is hearing Titewhai Harawira giving instructions to the PM afterwards: "Stand still John -- no, no, stand still ... "

A bit after that, I think it's Harawira who is apologising to him for the incident, and he says, "No problems, no problems."

But, actually, being assaulted like that is a problem - it would be for anyone, but it's even more of a problem for the Prime Minister.

    Then later:

Reporter: Not the welcome you would have been hoping for, Mr Key.
Key: Oh, look, you know, not gonna blow it out of proportion.
Woman It's OK. No, it's OK.

In fact, I think you'll find that nothing actually happened. The fellow just bumped into him by accident.

  • OnPoint: Don’t let them eat cake,

Now it seems that the NZ meaning of the word has come to prevail.

I'm reluctant to consider that meaning of hoon - as a young reckless driver - to originate from New Zealand. The Oxford English Dictionary has that usage dating back to a 1969 mention in a Brisbane newspaper.

    NaveahsMum (New Lynn)

Think supporters of so-called Eianstein should actually take a look closer to home and ask a few questions especially in this time of global crisis! Partner and I are struggling to pay our mortgage and would welcome some of that science funding cash to help out! Have to ask myself "What does a better thing for Kiwi society? Some equation that no one can really understand or for a hard working Kiwi family to be able to take their kids to the Gold Coast for a long overdue holiday?"

  • Hard News: Only in a relative sense,

They wouldn't consider it: on the basis that (wait for it) the bottle had been opened.

Wouldn't that be in violation of the Consumer Guarantees Act?

I mean, once I bought a bottle of orange juice that had started to ferment. I took it back to Foodtown and they happily exchanged it for a fresh one.

Surely the same would apply to the wine.

  • Hard News: The Trophy Hunter,

But the danger we were warned about most often wasn't river-crossings: it was hypothermia. We were repeatedly told about the symptoms of exposure, and how people might act under its influence.

Yes, that killer hypothermia! I remember watching "Such a Stupid Way to Die" before 4th form camp (which I didn't even go on - Robyn doesn't do the great outdoors). It was far too old and earnest to be taken seriously. Before long the class was laughing at virtually everything in the film. No one died of hypothermia on the camp.

I was interested to read recently that scientists have debunked the idea that we lose most body heat through the head.

The myth is thought to have arisen through a flawed interpretation of a vaguely scientific experiment by the US military in the 1950s. In those studies, volunteers were dressed in Arctic survival suits and exposed to bitterly cold conditions. Because it was the only part of their bodies left uncovered, most of their heat was lost through their heads.

  • Hard News: Trading Trade Me?,

Robyn, i'm surprised you didnt remember #cccccc and then #eeeeee the lightest legal grey you could have back then for subtle designy type design stuff whilst busy making pages under 50Kb.

I remember it now! Oh, it's all coming back. Very soon I'll be able to create a turn-of-the-millennium-style webpage.

    "Roses are #FF0000
    Violets are #0000FF
    All of my base
    Are belong to you"

I suppose that to some people, that will be the most romantic thing they have ever heard.

While other people go for a slightly different take on the romantic classic:

    Roses are red
    Violets are blue
    Il-Bordello's prices
    are lower for you!
